About Michael Schmidt
Michael has a master’s degree in Geo-ecology and Geo-botany and a PhD in Remote Sensing. After research in the frame of a tropical forest ecology project in Rwanda and DR Congo (1990-1994). In 1995 Michael started his PhD research in a partnership project between the German (DLR) and Brazilian space agency (INPE) on SAR based analysis in the Amazon. In 1998, Michael joined Conabio to build up a new remote sensing department. In 2003 Michael returned to DLR to head a research group on Remote Sensing contribution to biodiversity research. In 2009 Michael returned to CONABIO build the two currently operational monitoring systems, one RS based on Land Cover and Land Cover change detection using Machine Learning tools and one based on in situ data in 400 managed sites using audio and photo data on fauna.
