I was appointed as Senior Lecturer at the Department of Medicine, University of Otago in 2005. In 2013 I was promoted to Associate Professor and in 2016 I took over as Head of the Department of Medicine. My research interest is focussed on epithelial physiology and immunology as well as health service delivery. I am the Director of the GutHealthNetwork and PI of over 50 IBD related commercial trials and projects. I have published over 100 scientific articles, book chapters and case reports related to Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

New Zealand Director Of The Gem ProjectUniversity Of Otago Jun 2015 - Dec 2021Dunedin, New ZealandThis study has finished recruiting - The GEM study is an ongoing trial to find the trigger factors for Crohn's disease. Originating and funded by the Canadian Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, GEM stands for genetics, environment and microbiome. Together we are aiming to recruit 5000 first-degree relatives of patients with Crohn's disease. Baseline characteristics will be gathered and these people followed for 6 years or until they develop the disease themselves. We have 6 actively recruiting sites in New Zealand and one site in Brisbane.

PresidentNew Zealand Society Of Gastroenterology Nov 2016 - Nov 2018In November 2016 I have taken over as President of the NZ Society of Gastroenterology. I am hugely honored but also well aware of the responsibilities that come with this position. 2017 will see the first step of the introduction of a population-based colorectal cancer screening program. We at the Society are greatly concerned about the quality and the capacity of the workforce tasked with screening colonoscopies. Other burning issues are an ageing workforce and disparities throughout the country regarding access to specialist care.
