Following his studies at Carnegie Mellon University, Michael joined BMW Group’s Designworks in 1996 as an Industrial Designer, and in the 23 subsequent years has endeavored to create inspired mobility solutions that unite functional efficiency with visceral expression. In 2004 Michael co-designed the BMW H2R streamliner; setting 9 new world speed records for hydrogen-powered automobiles. Also in this timeframe, Michael was integral to the early phase development of BMW’s revolutionary Gina concept car; authoring a full size prototype for surface kinematics.Complementing these integrated design and technology projects, Michael has led numerous world-wide context to concept strategic initiatives to help the BMW Group’s brands build portfolio relevance in both established and emerging markets. These projects have defined new car concepts with causal linkages to contextual phenomena and inspirations.As Creative Director in 2008, Michael was tasked with the creative leadership of 18 simultaneous projects focusing on a portfolio of products and services for Megacity mobility. These programs outlined the early phase architecture, design vernacular, and product premise for BMW’s burgeoning i sub brand.2011 through 2013 saw Michael lead BMW’s design and development of a series of innovative carbon fiber 2 Man bobsleds for the US Olympic team: ultimately helping break a 62 year medal drought for the US men in 2 man Olympic competition. In 2016 Michael transitioned to BMW Design’s Munich headquarters to lead the BMW 2002 Hommage showcar project; culminating in the iconic Turbomeister. Continuing in Munich as the Head of Design for BMW Motorsport, Michael led numerous projects that currently compete on the world’s most challenging race circuits.Michael returned to BMW Group Designworks in 2019 as the Global Director of Automotive and Advanced Design. In 2023 Michael was promoted to Head of Design for BMW M in Munich.
