I retired from Jones Day at the end of 2019 following 40+ years of practicing antitrust and competition law domestically and internationally. I then joined the Executive Team of the Water Quality Association (WQA), the international trade association and laboratory, as its first General Counsel. WQA provides product and professional standards certification services, operates a fully accredited product testing and analytical laboratory supporting a certification program accredited by ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and SCC (Standards Council of Canada) to ISO/IEC 17065, manages an annual trade show and exposition and represents the residential, commercial and industrial water treatment industry in the United States and internationally. I also serve as General Counsel of the Water Quality Research Foundation (WQRF), an independent foundation, which sponsors scientific and academic research and education addressing a broad range of water quality issues.My practice at Jones Day focused on antitrust and competition law with an emphasis on the antitrust aspects of mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures. Most recently, I served as global antitrust counsel for clients in several major merger and acquisition transactions, including PotashCorp’s $38 billion merger-of-equals with Agrium to form Nutrien Ltd., Baxalta’s $32 billion merger into the Ireland-based Shire, Baxter International’s acquisition of India-based Claris Injectables and Zekelman Industries’ acquisition of Western Tube & Conduit from Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal. I was named a leading antitrust lawyer by Chambers USA, Chambers Global, the International Who’s Who of Competition Lawyers and Economists, the Guide to the World’s Leading Competition and Antitrust Lawyers, Legal 500 US, the Best Lawyers in America, Illinois Super Lawyers and Who’s Who Legal: Life Sciences.In addition, I serve on the adjunct law faculty at Loyola University Chicago, where I teach antitrust law and am a member of the Board of Advisors of the Institute for Consumer Antitrust Law Studies. I am also a longstanding Trustee of Children’s Home & Aid, an Illinois social services agency assisting families and children in Illinois where the need is greatest.I hold an A.B. with honors in philosophy and English from Quincy University and a J.D, cum laude from Loyola University Chicago, in addition to graduate work in jurisprudence and economics at Northwestern University.
