After a written application process and a formal interview, I was inducted into SELA cohort 2018. It is an honour to be a member of this academy as applications come from across the entire engineering faculty numbering thousands of students, yet each cohort comprises less than 40 members. The academy works with industry partners and academics to develop a broad range of leadership skills and to offer mentoring to the cohort. As part of the SELA process, I attended engineering and soft skills development workshops and I attended talks from industry leaders and experts about engineering and their individual paths into the industry.In our first year, we were set a public engagement project to excite and enthuse the Sheffield Community external to the university about engineering. We were specifically tasked to focus on the work that is done at The University of Sheffield. As a team, we attended the Get Up To Speed 2019 event at Magna Science Adventure Centre. For this event, we designed, developed and hosted a series of engineering-based activities, exhibits, and challenges to demonstrate the important work done by engineers. Each stand we hosted had the ambition to teach simple engineering concepts to the public in an attempt to spark an interest in engineering. After the success of our stands at ‘Get Up To Speed’, we were invited as a group to bring our exhibition to the ‘Pop-up University’ – a university-sponsored event for the public. The second event was based at the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield city centre meaning we were able to showcase our work to the general public.In our Second year, we undertook a project involving data-driven manufacturing. This involved our team researching methods in which manufacturing companies are utilising their data. We performed a survey of engineering SME's to understand how they both collect and use data. We performed a case study of data analysis of power and gas usage from a particular local SME.
