About Michael Skeuse

At the heart of every business is its people. And at the heart of every successful business is a dynamic and mutually supportive partnership between management and employees. I’m passionate about Human Resources Management because it’s the role within an organization that fosters that partnership. With a Master’s in Human Resources Management, I possess the knowledge and skillset to serve as that all-important bridge between management and employees, championing both the organization’s values and mission and the voice of the employees. Beyond the credentials, however, what uniquely positions me to provide innovative, hands-on, and inspirational leadership is the wide-ranging experience I bring to the role from a successful career in diverse fields.Whether serving as a logistics manager or as an Assistant Chief and firefighter, the thread that has run through my professional experience has been a commitment to building up employee morale and productivity, fostering workplace and job safety, and providing a forum for employees to voice their concerns and ideas. The end result is always the same: improved processes, reduced costs, a more positive work culture, more efficient achievement of corporate goals, and a staff who feel supported and personally invested in the success of the organization. While I am skilled at navigating the nuances of employee benefits, my commitment to workplace safety goes beyond a familiarity with worker’s comp packages. A certified first responder with active shooter training, I’m also First Aid/CPR/AED certified, as well as trained in workplace violence awareness and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). These qualifications, while not always a given in HR roles, have helped me to identify areas of opportunity for improved employee safety, and to implement innovative solutions.I’m on LinkedIn to explore additional opportunities to help organizations thrive, growing their profitability and market leadership as they grow their employer brand with a reputation for an engaged and high-performing workforce. Asst. Chief & Firefighter: Community Safety & Team Development | Budget & Personnel Management
New Hope Eagle Fire Company Sep 2015 - Present
    New Hope, Pennsylvania, United States
As a Firefighter and Assistant Chief for the New Hope Eagle Fire Company, I work with my team to provide critical emergency response in the community, responding to fires and other incidents to protect the lives and property of our neighbors. Giving back to my community in this way has been part of my life since I was 16 and started as a volunteer firefighter with the Lambertville Fire Department. Here, in this leadership role, I now have the opportunity to leverage my experience and extensive training to manage scenes, personnel, and equipment during emergency operations, as well as administer the finances of our department. As Assistant Chief, I have focused my efforts on several key areas, including:• Team Building: As a volunteer department, it’s critical to keep morale high so that members feel engaged, safe, and valued. I’ve implemented frequent team building activities, extracurricular events to foster the kind of camaraderie needed to respond as a cohesive unit in the face of an emergency, and regular open floor meetings where all members are encouraged to express their concerns and thoughts.• Process Improvement: During the pandemic, I worked with two other chiefs to implement a program where the station was staffed 24/7 by rotating duty crews. This helped keep our station open and our firefighters safe, as a small, dedicated crew was on hand to respond to minor calls rather than the whole station having to respond with a turnout of 20 to 30 people. It also improved our service to the community, as having a crew in the house at all times meant they were able to deploy in under a minute when called.

Logistics Manager: Inventory | Hr Management & Workplace Safety | Process & System Improvement
    Gelest Apr 2017 - Aug 2019
    Greater Philadelphia Area
I was brought on as Logistics Manager to resolve issues stemming from an overburdened department and developed the job description and responsibilities for my role in real time as I forged a path towards greater efficiency and stability for this business-critical area.As Gelest, Inc. secures its financing based not on assets but on the value of its inventory, each year, lending institutions would seek to verify the value of the in-house inventory via extensive auditing. Since inventory accuracy was key to maintaining funding, I worked to develop and implement organization-wide systems and process improvements, leveraging Six Sigma practices to streamline and optimize. With responsibility for $29M+ in inventory in two countries, I also interviewed, hired, and trained staff to assist me in ultimately boosting inventory accuracy by 43% in eight months.Improving and shoring up the stability of our inventory management functions depended on business and financial acumen, but also the ability to forge relationships with external agencies as well as employees. I took an active role in working with financial lending institutions to lead inventory audits and served as liaison with our safety manager and local fire department.Internally, I helped build and develop our inventory personnel, handling HR functions including recruitment, performance evaluation, and, when needed, termination of employment. I also spearheaded several workplace safety initiatives including:• Developing an injury reporting system to track incidents and proactively address emerging trends or developing issues.• Conducting daily safety inspections as well as incident investigations and analysis.• Creating job safety analysis documents and protocols for plant positions and operations.• Establishing in-house safety training programs and coaching employees to facilitate the training.

Logistics Manager: Shipping & Order Fulfillment | Hr & Staff Development | Process Optimization
    Gelest Jan 2016 - Apr 2017
    Morrisville, Pennsylvania, United States
Taking on the role of Logistics Manager was exciting for me because it gave me the chance to help the organization with an issue that was costing them money and customers: significant and frequent shipping delays, and a shipping department that felt overworked and undervalued.I managed a team of eight employees who handled all internal and external logistics, administering HR functions including hiring, firing, payroll, staff development, and conflict resolution. By building up my team, fostering an improved relationship between the logistics and packaging departments, and implementing systems and process improvements, I was able to increase order accuracy by 32%, slash the wait time between order placement and carrier pickup by 54%, and clear the backlog of delayed shipments. These improvements enabled my team to perform at a much higher level, and with greater job satisfaction. One of the achievements I’m most proud of was coordinating and leading the team to execute the move of 3,600+ chemicals, the logistics department, and the chemical packing department to a brand-new facility – all while maintaining product segregation, following DOT regulations, and meeting corporate deadlines. This role was fulfilling to me because I was able to leverage process optimization and streamlining to take a demoralized department and not only increase their productivity but increase their morale and their pride in and ownership of their work, allowing them to reach their full potential as employees.

Assistant Terminal Manager: Personnel & Workflow Management | Compliance & Cost Savings
    Reagent Chemical & Research Jun 2011 - Sep 2015
Institute, Wv; Houston, Tx; Ringoes, Nj
As Assistant Terminal Manager I fulfilled an internal and external role, managing personnel as well as representing the company to third-party agencies including railroad providers, carriers, representatives of the Federal Railroad Association (FRA), and auditors.I exercised direct oversight for employees and assets at 11 locations that supported 42 drivers. In an HR capacity I managed personnel, oversaw payroll, and maintained a database to track and schedule driver physicals to ensure DOT compliance. It was also important to me that decisions affecting drivers be made with their interests in mind. To that end, when I was tasked as part of a team to assess the various types of equipment used across each terminal to consolidate costs by standardizing purchases, I helped serve as a bridge between the corporation’s goals and the needs and preferences of the people using the equipment. I focused on having the voice of the employee heard and factored into the decisions about which brands and types of equipment were most comfortable and effective, with the end result being cost savings for the company and improved usability for drivers.I also worked to represent the organization to auditors and inspectors, and in negotiations with third-party vendors and service providers. One such negotiation with common carriers resulted in additional savings for the company by securing lower well pad rates.

Logistics Manager: Systems Improvement & Personnel Management | Employee Communication & Safety
    Reagent Chemical & Research Jan 2011 - Jun 2011
    Houston, Texas, United States
As Logistics Manager I represented the organization in negotiations on multiple levels, from obtaining a reduced rate for leasing new tractors to securing a lower than quoted cost to open and operate a brand-new facility.I also focused on systems improvement initiatives related to driver communication and safety. It came to my attention that there were connectivity issues with the electronic system being used by drivers to communicate with dispatch, and by dispatch to track drivers. A combination of lack of training on the proper usage of the system and frequent downtime led to lapses in communication. I worked to remedy the connectivity issues as well as ensure that all employees utilizing the system were trained in its proper usage, eventually steering the organization to permanently install a more reliable system in all vehicles.Having access to timely and accurate safety data is also key, and so I spearheaded the setup and management of the Vigillo system to obtain Carrier Safety Administration (CSA) data. With the system installed, I was able to closely monitor our safety data, addressing any issues, providing feedback and, if needed, disciplinary action in the event of a violation. One of the innovations I brought to the organization was the initiative I took to research, design, and implement a slip seat program to reduce the amount of time tractor trailers were sitting in the yard between trips. The program enabled fresh drivers to utilize trucks as soon as they were ready to be sent out again with a new load, ensuring increased speed and efficiency without compromising safety.
