My first career leg was as a CPA firm partner at KPMG LLP. I learned what made companies flourish or flounder over 2 1/2 decades...ranging in size from GE to two brothers running a leather tannery. I switched from accounting and advisory to being an online operator as a segment CFO for Fairfax Financial (Toronto:FRFHF). Our segment acquired distressed businesses for restructuring and turnaround. My job was basically to turn losses into profits for the better part of a decade. Absorbing knowledge and gaining experience in the large company and public company sectors for more than 30 years, I was drawn to apply both into the private company middle-market. I joined an entrepreneurial family business as CFO. Joining at $50M annual revenue, we achieved the concurrent goals of $250M revenue and NYSE IPO seven years later. This experience demonstrated that a company can achieve both phenomenal growth and at the same time adopt the controls and risk management that are necessary to attract outside capital.After that, I returned to my advisory roots, first as a fractional CFO and now as a business value growth advisor. I have merged the length and breadth of my experiences with a suite of modern-day applications and tools so that middle-market companies can achieve exponential growth in market value through a guided and owner/employee-leveraged process. I have also learned that a business owner should always be preparing to convert that growth into long-term value and not just this year's income....sometimes, opportunities come along to convert the next ten years of hard work into value received today. Effectively, a business strategy is an exit strategy and vice-versa. I have combined my credentials of CPA, CMAA and CEPA into an approach where you can grow your income as well as your attractiveness and readiness to harvest increased company value.
