Title: The Role of Trade Unions and Workers’ Interests in the Social-Ecological Transformation towards a Climate-Friendly Society. The Case of AustriaThis project aims to contribute to a better understanding of the role of trade unions in Austria in current climate change politics and analyses the options for enhancing this role in order to contribute to socio-ecological transformation. A precondition for enhancing this role is an increasing political priority of climate change issues within trade unions. Key here is that, on the one hand, trade unions augment understanding of the complex problems related to climate change and link them to the social questions and interests of wage-earners and, on the other hand, to better anchor the interests of wage earners in Austrian climate policy.Up to the present, trade unions have rarely been a focus of (social)-scientific research on climate change policy. This interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary project intends to close this research gap. Moreover, we want to strengthen the focus of trade unions that take climate change issues seriously and see the necessity of creating alliances across institutional and mental barriers.

In the past years, the number of car users has heavily risen in the programme area. One reason for this lies in the intensification of cross-border traffic due to the opening of the Austrian labour market. In addition, many commuters opt for individual transport (e.g. 79% in Vienna). There were several initiatives as regards cross-border transport development, but one did not tackle the mobility behaviour of commuters. Nor is known how the working premises influence the mobility behaviour and thereby a decision for more environmentally-friendly mobility behaviour can be stimulated. Moreover, there is a lack of data concerning travel habits and needs of commuters in the border region which should build the basis for a sustainable regional transport development. Previous projects concentrated on transport infrastructure and services. This project centres the demand side.The objective is to understand the mobility behaviour of commuters and to stimulate measures worked out with employers in favour of more environmentally-friendly mobility behaviour. This will be underpinned with research on travel habits and surveys which provide exact data on motivation, needs, and behaviour. The research is the basis for measures that promote a more environmentally-friendly transport behaviour (improvement in utilisation of public transport, awareness raising on eco-mobility, financial support, travel planning, promotion of bicycle transport, car pooling, limitation of parking possibilities at the working premises, etc.).Packages of measures will be implemented whereby their effect is analysable. A “tool kit eco-mobility” to be used long-term will be created that enables a further use of project results. The goal of the project is the analysis of demand, the promotion of eco-mobility, and a more effective use of the infrastructure.
