About Michael Steranka

I am a software engineer who previously worked at MITRE and graduated with a B.S. in computer science at UMass Amherst. My time at MITRE was mostly spent being a core engineer developing a communications system prototype. I implemented a large portion of the C++ code base and led a team of early career engineers. Additionally, I worked other projects in varying domains including security and privacy and cellular systems. Prior to working at MITRE, I graduated with my bachelor's at UMass Amherst, where I also did research analyzing the security and performance of C/C++ memory allocators. My interests primarily span performance and security analysis in runtime systems and networks. I have experience in C/C++, Python, Java, Bash, and x86.

    Contributed to two research projects analyzing the security and performance of C/C++ memory allocators (i.e., malloc/free in C and new/delete in C++). Contributed to a memory profiler for identifying poor memory usage and allocation patterns that could benefit from custom allocators. Profiler was implemented in C++ using Intel's instrumentation framework, Pin, to hook calls to malloc/free and reads/writes to allocated memory. Also contributed to a utility for evaluating the security of memory allocators. Secure allocators can mitigate memory errors like buffer overflows and use-after-frees by randomizing the "dishing out" of memory. Developed a utility that would measure the entropy and randomness of allocation sequences for an allocator to determine its security effectiveness.
