Systems Development Engineer
Design, configure, manage and deploy AWS systems across all 20 AWS regions, EC2 fleet and Amazon employee hosts using Python, Ruby, MySQL, JQuery, HTML5, Flask, DynamoDB, Click and VirusTotal. To date I have created five AWS systems with an emphasis on monitoring and maintaining operational excellence across AWS. These systems include:Clamps: used to repair & execute on thousands of EC2 hosts containing full filesystems, provide aggregate data & analyze results on what data was filling them. With this tool I was able to fix the full filesystem problem on 20,000+ hosts worldwide in a week, analyzed which software components were filling the filesystems & engaged owners to fix them.Scruffy: used to fix EC2 droplets broken in the provisioning systems when preparing them to be recycled or for customer use. In effort to fix these failed computers & return them to service, this system gathered known failure modes from local experts, mapped them to known remediation, querying systems for the signatures of the failed modes & executed remediation. Use of Scruffy enabled the EC2 organization to fix 50,000+ computers, recognize future provisioning problems & fix them, returning roughly $300mil of hardware back to service.Mercurial Spectator: used to automate the process needed to aggregate & post weekly operational metrics for AWS services, providing number of deployments executed, rollbacks, etc, ahead of weekly reviews. This scaled up the solution & enabled me to onboard this tool to other teams & managers in the AWS services, saving them several hours of work weekly.ModernSeagull: CLI tool used by global security team to automate the handling of high-severity phishing (malicious email) attempts. The tool scanned attachments for malware using VirusTotal, evaluated domain reputation scores for any links in the email, & checked for counterfeiting. Using this tool enabled the global security team to save headcount & redirect resource time to other needs.
