Whilst undertaking my placement term with the well established Civil Engineering business, I was involved in a variety of tasks such as estimating projects, producing Bills of quantities, assisting with CVR’s, Applications for payment, certification and managing my own projects. Having the opportunity to maintain a strong relationship with clients alongside engagement with the onsite workforce was critical to the flow of projects as well as building into the personal development of my career. Working as part of the commercial team enabled me to learn more about the role of the QS whilst also expanding the skills necessary for continual development.

Working alongside Hitachi Energy has enabled me to be involved in the construction of a 400KV GIS substation for improvements to the electricity network in the Northeast of Scotland. The experience on the £50M site has strengthened my understanding of the power sector whilst teaching me valuable practices universally employed throughout industry. Due to the extensive range of the project, I was able to practice various tasks both in the office and onsite. This included the assembly of insulated switchgear, earthing components, connecting busbars, SF6 pressurisation, and erecting supporting structures. As the project progressed, I was involved in the carrying out routine quality checks, ITPs, and NCRs within the office, learning the importance of a critical path required for successful task execution.
