This, the mantra of his mentor, has become the ‘watch-phrase’ he has adopted for not only his life, but in the operations of the school and its students’ education, as well as their co-curricular activities. Michael Sutherland started formal pursuits of education as a vocation at the Mico Teachers’ College, where he studied Home Economics, with an emphasis on Food and Nutrition. He went on to attend Stetson University Music School in DeLand, Fl. for a degree in Vocal Performance; which serves him to this day as he actively sings in and conducts numerous choruses across the Island. Mr. Sutherland has taught at both the Primary and Secondary level at several institutions, serving at the Crescent All Age School (93 – 94), Westwood High School for Girls (94 – 95), and at The Queen’s School (95 – 2010). He also taught at Music at Wolmers’ and Queen’s Preparatory Schools. He was appointed principal of the Central Branch All Age School in January 2010. He has since become a rallying point for staff, students and parents, his passion for excellence and his zeal for all his students to achieve have been an innervating boost to the school’s operation. Employing a holistic approach to the realization of these drives, Mr Sutherland often engages businesses, parents, school alumni as well as community members in the school’s environs to participate in school life, to have a positive say in the education and development of their and the nation’s future; personifying the truth of the Greek Proverb: “A society grows great when old[er] men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”
