Michael Szwarcbord is a pioneer in the application of Lean Thinking in public healthcare (2003) and local government (2008). Whilst Chief Executive, Flinders Medical Centre (FMC), in South Australia, and subsequently Executive Director, Acute Services, Southern Adelaide Health Service, Michael was instrumental in introducing Lean Thinking into FMC in 2003. He has encouraged a unique approach by tackling hospital-wide patient flows, creating a leadership-based culture based on Lean Thinking, and developing in-house clinical experts as Lean facilitators. In 2008 Michael established a Lean Thinking consultancy to support the development of Lean Thinking in service industries. That same year he commenced the introduction of Lean Thinking into the City of Melbourne. The City of Melbourne is now building a reputation for its unique approach to business improvement. During the past five years Michael has worked extensively with local government and health services across Australia and New Zealand introducing Lean concepts and approaches. Michael initiated the Australasian Redesigning Healthcare Summit which is now in its 9th year. Michael has been a senior executive in the Australian public service for more than 20 years. He has had numerous appointments to State and Commonwealth ministerial advisory committees.
