Michael was VP & Associate General Counsel, Insurance and Litigation for FBN. In this role he lead the insurance legal, regulatory, brokerage, compliance and litigation functions for the FBN family of companies. Specifically, Michael provided legal counsel, guidance and oversight of all areas of the Company’s insurance and risk management programs; managed FBN brokerage relationships, including all associated insurance coverages and claims matters; manages FBN’s self-insured risk vehicles, including captive insurance companies; strategically managed total cost of risk in connection with Treasury and Finance; advised and structured FBN Insurance with respect to agency and AIP issues as well as with reinsurance and other capital markets; provided strategic support for insurance corporate development initiatives and integration of newly acquired businesses post-closing; managed, counseled, and advised on matters with respect to the US Federal Crop Insurance Program; Michael also managed all litigation and collection matters for FBN, including supervising FBN's outside counsel.

Headed ADM’s Insurance & Risk Management Department with responsibility for ADM’s global insurance programs, ADM’s captive insurance operations and ADM’s claims and worker's compensation areas. Served as President and General Counsel of Agrinational Insurance Company and its subsidiaries, including being responsible for the P&L, financial reporting and corporate governance for these entities. Served as a Director and member of the Audit Committee of United Insurance Company, a Cayman Island insurer. Supervised a staff of eighteen and the activities of ADM’s brokers, loss control engineers and other service providers. Worked with senior management on risk identification and risk management across all of ADM’s business units. Provided legal advice to ADM's captive and crop insurance operations.• Formed an insurance subsidiary in Illinois to save approximately $4 million a year on insurance self-procurement taxes.• Acquired an insurer with licenses in 42 states to be the fronting carrier on crop and property insurance which resulted in a cost savings of approximately $2 million per year.• Acquired a crop insurance MGA and oversaw the growth of that business from $28 million to $550 million in gross written premium; ultimately oversaw the sale of that business for a gain of $120 million.• Was the second captive insurer to reinsure employee benefit programs, including life insurance and LTD in the US and multi-national life and health pooling outside the US, for an annual savings of $2 million.• Directed the growth of ADM's Owner Controlled Insurance Program to achieve a cumulative savings of approximately $120 million over 14 years while significantly improving contractor safety.• Oversaw the handling of approximately 4000 open claims per year with an incurred value of approximately $250 million.• Placed over $2 billion of reinsurance annually.• Managed the P&L of ADM’s captive operations to return $60 million of invested capital in three years.
