Strategic Technical Architect
Senior Team Lead Software Development
My company changed its name from RSC Commercial Services to C&A Services. Next to daily business, I became product owner of "Bluemix" and "Mobile Development" initiative where I gained experience in node.js, Javascript, Ionic, Xcode, Swift, Mule ESB Enterprise to create first apps (B2E).
Senior Team Lead Software Development
As I took responsibility for more and more applications, my team grew more and more. End of 2011 I became Senior TL leading 25 developers toghether with my three team leads. To manage complexity in communication, architecture and applications, I established an additional layer of lead developer / domain architects. In this setting we were able to create a star-shaped process manager architecture for our business domains logistic, admin and selling. Using this business domain architecture, we managed within a year to create and integrate an RFID solution together with Checkpoint, Avery Dennison and creative systems into GS1 process manager to support C&A supply chain. Personally I contributed as leading software architect during pre-study, proof of concept and elaboration phases.End of 2013 I co-founded "Software Development Initiative Model" to create knowledge bases and to standardize patterns of software creation within C&A. I became product owner "XSL-FO / XSLT and Printing" and "Testing in Software Development". For the latter one, I established QF-Test test automation tool, using PageObjects architecture, into our continuous delivery pipeline and additionally used this system to check regularly if our productional applications are still up and running from a user perspective at various places all over the world. During my time as Senior Team Lead I joined two software selection processes from different perspectives. The first one, led by Javelin Group, to choose a WMS for distribution center, where I represented the "make" part in the make or buy decision and consulted regarding technical requirements when it came to buy software. The second one was an in-house project to choose a modeling tool for BPMN, UML and database modeling.
Team Lead Software Development
As a Team Lead in Software Development I quickly learned that coding and leadership don't work out. But creating software on a more abstract level, focusing on architecture and design of an application together with business, leading and coaching my team (6 - 10 developer), concentrating on what needs to be done instead of how, proofed to be fulfilling. Within our Integrated Merchandise Management System project I took responsibility for applications in logistic, admin and selling domain. MS Project knowledge was crucial at this point of time to get all projects ready in time and fit perfectly to our evolving Rational Unified Process template. In 2004 my so far biggest project started. As technical project manager and architect I was responsible for creating a warehouse management system for depots and its merchandise process manager which handles round about 300 000 picking requests per day across 25 depots in Europe. The next three years I was busy with prototyping with our customers, use case refinements, estimates, project management and team lead in general. I learnt about complexity to design processes asynchronously in a message oriented environment and gained lots of experience regarding enterprise integration patterns. Additionally I experienced what it means to outsource and insource parts of the project using nearshore partners.Over the years my team and I took over responsibility for more and more programs to maintain and we finished a couple of new mid size web application projects (each about 600 - 800 development days) successfully. Additionally I led a group to exchange knowledge between Cobol and Java teams. In this group, e.g. we've created the idea to use Cobol developers to support Java teams regarding some stylish printing (we always had a lack of Java developers) with XSL-FO combined with SVG graphics. Soon XSL-FO became company standard when it came to printouts.
Java Application Developer
After gaining some experience with Java, I was very sure that Java has a great fortune. Although many critics told me that Java is too slow for professional development, my run on Java was unstoppable. In 1999 I worked on a project to create a warehouse management system in Java. With Visual Age for Java, Togehter J and TREND business framework. TREND changed my way of writing software, as it was an object oriented and model based approach. I learned a lot about object oriented development in general, design patterns, coding style guides, RMI application server, object relational mapping and model driven development.Unfortunately this project was stopped due to company decsion to buy Retek ERP system with the aim to replace all self written software.Nevertheless from this point onwards Java development strategy changed to create quick win solutions. Retek ERP left plenty of gaps which we could fill with with our creations. To follow this stategy, development changed process model from waterfall to an iterative incremental approach. A very good decision, as Retek project - waterfall approach - failed after a year and a half. After decision was made, that our company creates an Integrated Merchandise Management System on it's own, Java development grew enormously - not only for quick win applications, but for GUI development in big projects, too. Within this time I was highly involved in following projects:Support AROS Tool - administration, reporting and simulation system to tweak parameters for merchandise replenishment batchCARMA / CBS - invoice clearing, goods receipt, claim handling and note creation, bookkeeping with all legal aspects, document overview and country distribution processesIn 2002 I became Lead Developer for CARMA / CBS. Influenced by the publications from Kent Bent "Extreme programming explained" and Martin Fowlers "Refactoring", my team and I proofed how productive techniques, like e.g. pairprogramming and unit testing, can be.
