Michael Loong Peng Tan is a senior lecturer and researcher in the field of low dimensional nanoelectronics devices in the Computational Nanoelectronics (CoNE) Research Group, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering and was appointed as a tutor in the same university in September 2003. He started his Master by research on June 2004 and carried out his research as a graduate intern in Penang Design Centre (PDC) Intel Technology Sdn. Bhd, Penang. He was awarded Masters of Engineering from UTM in 2006. Subsequently, Michael pursued his PhD in Engineering at Queens’ College, Cambridge from October 2007 until June 2011. He was awarded his PhD degree in July 2011 at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. He is a lifetime corporate member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Institute of Physics (IOP), life member of the American Physical Society (APS) and senior member of IEEE (SMIEEE). His research interests are in device modeling and circuit simulation of silicon and carbon-based nanotransistor.

I supervised basic electronic workshop, electronic, microprocessor and VLSI Lab. I developed new syllabus and coordinate microelectronics subject for third and fourth year students, namely Semiconductor Material Engineering and Modeling and Simulation of Microelectronic Devices. As a professional engineer, I also give lectures on engineering ethics in Professional Engineering Practice.

Graduate InternIntel Jul 2004 - Nov 2005I was attached with Intel for 16 months for my graduate trainee program. Intel Penang Design Center (PDC), established in 1992, is one of the largest and most advanced Intel Design and Development centers in the Asia Pacific region. I was exposed to Intel architecture definition, digital logic design and validation, synthesis and layout of industry standard silicon and SOC. I learned how to differentiate between short and long channel MOSFET. My tasks were to formulate simple analytical and semi-empirical equations for device model applicable to nanoscale devices by taking into account velocity saturation. This consideration is important when developing compact model for nano transistor. In addition to that, Intel Proprietary Schematic Editor and Intel Proprietary Circuit Simulator is used to provide the experimental data for this research. -

I supervised Basic Electronics Laboratory, Microprocessor Laboratory and Electrical Computer Aided Design (ECAD) Laboratory.
