About Michael Thomas, Ph.D.

Work planning and control (WPC) systems integrator for the Solar Energy Research Facility within the Materials, Chemical, and Computational Science directorate at the National Renewable Energy Labratory. WPC is the use of formal and documented processes for identifying and mitigating risks when planning, authorizing, releasing l, and performing work. The purpose of WPC is to protect workers, the public, and the environment from risks associated with inconsistent and inadequate planning, authorization, and control of work.Research at Savannah River National Labratory revolved around integration and utilization of polychromatic light sources, continuous wave or nano- to femtosecond pulsed lasers for various applications within nuclear chemistry, physics, and photochemistry to enhance or develop new spectroscopic capability. Primary researcher responsible for conducting transient absorption and steady state studies on novel compounds with applications in nuclear nonproliferation or renewable energy production (range from UV to MIR). Additionally, primary maintainer of transient absorption and related laser systems with ability to modify existing systems to facilitate various experimental designs. Specific projects included development and integration of spectroscopic on-line monitoring system to determine radionuclide presence and concentration within product streams in real time; development of novel method to gather real time kinetic information of spontaneous reactions in a cryogenic environment utilizing ultrafast transient spectroscopy; development of Raman waveguides for nuclear process off-gassing analysis; instrument development, programming, and installation; development of novel materials for hydrogen production via light induced water splitting; determine transient absorption changes in presence of magnetic fields.Graduate research, in tandem with the NSF GRFP, focused on supramolecular and covalent donor-acceptor systems for energy harvesting applications. Studies were conducted through various electrochemical and spectroscopic steady-state and time-resolved methods, such as ultrafast kinetics studies performed with femtosecond laser systems. Various applications include solar energy to electricity conversion, photodynamic therapy, and fuel production from solar energy.
