He adjusted my job description to include designing demonstrations. Michael made it possible to get training to work in the Physics machine shop. Designing lecture demonstrations provided practical use for the theories concurrently taught in my classes. This increased my engagement in those classes, and my position as a Physics department employee. Michael’s support to continuously improve throughout the learning process developed the confidence necessary to solve design problems. Because of Michael’s encouragement of individual skills and interests, I found my work engaging and enjoyable. Third, Michael instills a sense that the work of individual team members serves a larger purpose. He acknowledges the efforts, and contributions of each team member. Michael makes team members aware of how their work increases the quality of teaching offered by the CU Physics department. He explains why it is important to actively engage students in the learning process. He puts emphasis on the process of teaching that fuels the department. I observed increased student participation in lectures, received feedback on my designs from professors who used them, and was included in celebrations for the results of our recruiting events.
