About Michael Tierney

I am happily transplanted in the coalfields of West Virginia that I fell in love with as an intern with the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial at age 20 in 1978. Deeply influenced by the Catholic Worker movement whose New York house I first stayed at during spring break during my freshman year at college. Believe that helping people tell and share their stories is the foundation of education, advocacy, hospitality and justice. Proud land steward, with my wife Marcelle St Germain and our children Luke and Mary of 125 acres of mountain land on Big Ugly Creek in Lincoln County WV since 1987. Songwriter, photographer, children's advocate and book enthusiast (particularly community story collections, documentary photography, and children's literature).

Grew from a writing group of children in foster care, founded Big Ugly Community Center (1995), WV Dreamers Program (1997). Dreamers program recognized as a national model by Pew Partnerships in 2002--works with community leaders to develop programs for children from birth to high school graduation.

    One of 60 international fellows (20 each from US, Latin America and Southern Africa) studying community development together through cross visits (went to Brazil, Dominican Republic, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Israel, Palestine and India), and community project (led to development of WV Dreamers model)

    Mosaic (South Boston High School) Feb 1980 - Dec 1987
    Founded a community documentation program in the Foxfire tradition so that students at the violence torn school could "show the way we really are to our communities and ourselves"--students worked in an after school jobs program producing oral history, photography and original writing collections documenting their communities of South Boston, Dorchester, and Roxbury at a time when it was not safe to visit each others neighborhoods. Received a National Endowment for the Humanities Youth Award for this work (1984)
