I have had the opportunity to research refugee access to health care, the use of telemedicine to reach rural populations, financial literacy of refugees, and to travel to Thailand as part of a research team to investigate the effects of the introduction of a Western diet on obesity rates and body image in a multinational study. For my participation in research, I received the Undergraduate Researcher transcript designation, and was nominated as one of six students to the Undergraduate Research Advisory Board for 2015-2016.

Cache Refugee and Immigrant ConnectionIn these positions I have had the chance to work with refugees 10-15 hours a week and to help them to settle into a new life here in Utah. This has been an invaluable experience working with many different cultures, and learning how to navigate health and financial systems with populations coming from widely varying backgrounds. Main responsibilities:Facilitate biweekly walk-in hours where refugees can bring forms, resumes, and other paperwork.Serve as a tutor for the high school refugee after school club, make home visits to refugees, and teach a weekly citizenship class preparing refugees to take the US naturalization test. Awards and Distinctions:• Cache Refugee and Immigrant Connection Volunteer of the Year (2015).• People In Action award ~ I was recognized by Americorps on behalf of the Lieutenant Governor of Utah for my dedication to the Cache Valley Refugees (2014).

I have had the chance to practice these skills several times a week as a Supplemental Instructor for General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, a University Teaching Fellow for Macroeconomics, a tutor for the university athletics department in Economics, Biology, and Chemistry, and especially as a Math tutor for a 5th grade class at Wilson Elementary School.

I have spent over 1,200 hours with mentally disabled youth, and through this close association, have experienced some of the complexities that exist in the American health system for individuals with disabilities. Some of my responsibilities included accompanying them to medical appointments, administering medications, accompanying them at school, performing physical therapy, and serving as a mentor. - Employee of the Month (December 2013).- CPR and Crisis Prevention Institute Certification (2013).
