In my current role, I am responsible for developing and maintaining the vital software running on the MicroLok product suite of safety-critical railroad signaling controllers. I was able to quickly learn a large, unfamiliar codebase, written in C, to support the addition of new functionality and the identification and resolution of software bugs. My daily work involves interfacing with a team of software and programmable hardware developers to design the vital software and interface it with other components, including a data bus for physical IO cards, a communications link manager, and a web interface for system monitoring and configuration. My accomplishments at this job include the following:• Updated a vital communications protocol to support interfacing with car-borne controllers, while identifying and implementing reliability improvements.• Wrote the vital software interface to programmable hardware for the vital coded output function. Supported troubleshooting the programmable hardware design by creating an automated Python test setup to exercise the system in different configurations and rapidly change states. These efforts supported a faster schedule for delivering this new functionality.• Identified, documented, and resolved defects prior to the firmware delivery for safety evaluations, saving time that would have to be spent making an additional release to resolve the defect.• Assisted in the migration of the vital software codebase to Git version control. Configured an automated build pipeline using GitLab CI. Wrote a Git/GitLab "quick start guide" to assist developers unfamiliar with Git.• Supported enhancement and defect correction efforts on legacy products.• Developed and maintained system-level requirements documents to assist in the software, programmable hardware, and validation team efforts for implementing new I/O board functionality.
