Michael Tran is the Managing Director and founder of the Digital Intelligence Strategy platform at RBC Capital Markets. DIS is a thematic macro research team powered by data science and alternative data (Top 3 ranked in the Institutional Investor polls). The mission of DIS is to leverage geospatial analytics, natural language processing, neural networks and alt data to identify hidden themes and actionable investment opportunities spurred by real time global events. Based in New York, Michael is also responsible for RBC’s Global Energy Strategy. He leads the firm’s house view on energy markets including macro supply and demand fundamentals.Michael has spent 15+ years in investment research, sales and trading, and investment banking with major banks like UBS based in London and energy trading platforms like BP in Calgary. Michael's views are frequently quoted in media outlets and he routinely appears on television networks like Bloomberg, CNN and CNBC. He is a frequent advisor to both the Canadian Federal and Alberta Provincial Governments on issues pertaining to energy policy and budgeting. Michael is also a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at New York University’s Center for Global Affairs. He serves on the Advisory Board of Orbital Insight, a Silicon Valley based geospatial intelligence SaaS start up. He also serves on the Board of the New York Energy Forum and on the Business Committee of the US Association of Energy Economists (USAEE). He graduated with distinction from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Economics.
