About Michael Tuskey
I grew up in a vibrant Mexican American community and attended a dual-language school which ignited a passion in me to bridge cultures and people through teaching Spanish language and culture. I truly believe that the acquisition of another language and its culture broadens our view of the world, helps us better connect with others, and aids us in making the world a better place. I also believe in the positive and transformative difference a teacher can make in a student's life and strive to be that for my students.

Permanent Building Substitute
CurrentAs a Permanent Building Substitute at Jefferson Junior High my primary job duty is to deliver quality instruction in a wide range of subjects, following lesson plans left by the classroom teacher and making adjustments as needed. Additional job duties are also assigned as needed throughout the day, including lunchroom supervision, library supervision, among others.
Tasting Room Attendant
In conjunction with the Front of House team, I ensure an excellent guest experience by providing team-based service and intentionally engaging our guests. My responsibilities include conducting wine tastings, inviting guests to join our wine club, managing retail areas and inventory, and taking call-in and to-go orders, and managing carryout, curbside, and delivery orders. As part of my job, I also take continuing education in food and wine.
Front Of House
My duties in this fast-casual restaurant include taking customer orders, preparing food on the line, expediting and running food, bussing tables, stocking, and coffee and beverage preparation. I also work and bartend for events hosted at our restaurants.
Summer Camp Unit Leader
Working with a team of 20 people, we worked to create a fun and safe environment where kids could build relationships and hear about the love of Jesus. On average, we saw 70 kids a day, ages 4-13, and engaged them in various classes and field trip activities.
Student Teacher
In my position as a student teacher, I strived to cultivate positive relationships with my students and impart important skills that they can use in both their language learning journeys and their lives beyond high school. In the classroom, I sought to implement increasingly more communicative practices into the curriculum, with an aim towards authentic communication. I also valued integrating a wide variety of Hispanic cultural products, practices, and perspectives in the existing curriculum. Specifically for our heritage learners, I sought to further infuse language arts into the program and balance the perspectives in the history curriculum.
Clinical Experience
During my first semester, I sought to infuse their already well-established program with even more communicative learning for L2 learners and language arts for heritage speakers. For our L2 learners, I designed a 2-day learning segment that fit snuggly into their curriculum, where I introduced new vocabulary by incorporating communicative activities I designed (including a communicative get-to-know-you bingo, a crossword puzzle, and battleship) and lead a TPRS story. For our heritage speakers, I modified an identification activity and incorporated reading comprehension strategies into their reading about the Maya.
Camp Counselor
As a camp counselor, it was my job to provide daily care and socioemotional and spiritual guidance for children ages 7-17, alongside planning and/or leading 2 programs a week and planning nightly devotional talks with the campers. Some notable programs I helped lead were were lei making, advanced ‘ukulele class, and sign language worship music. Additional responsibilities included promoting a constructive and positive environment, ensuring campers participated in all the scheduled programing, facilitating meaningful and culturally sensitive conversations, fostering healthy friendships between the campers, mediating conflicts, and providing socioemotional intervention in a high-stress environment with at-risk children while ensuring the appropriate paperwork and protective measures were followed per ACA, USDA, and TSA policies.
Clinical Experience
This was my second pre-professional placement where I took an active role in classroom management, leading activities, and giving lessons. As part of the clinical, I wrote a lesson about healthy eating and the parts of the body where students learned about nutrition standards in other countries, were introduced to the body parts using TPR, drew monsters to practice the body parts, and played Twister for an interactive and communicative activity.
Clinical Experience
I got the opportunity to observe under a Golden Apple scholar as well as some of her colleagues. Class observations occurred at the Spanish II, Spanish III, Heritage Speakers, and AP Spanish Language levels.
