Michael Tutton is a journalist with The Canadian Press and has over 30 years of experience in his profession. He is also (and much more recently!) an ordained Anglican priest, appointed in 2018 as an associate priest at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Halifax and assisting with liturgies in a number of Halifax-area parishes. He's currently providing priestly duties alongside the Rev. Jody Clarke in the parish of St. Timothy and St. Paul in Hatchet Lake, N.S. Michael's career as a journalist began after graduating with honours from Carleton University's school of journalism in 1983. He travelled to Central and South America and filed reports from those nations for Maclean's magazine, the Toronto Star, the Winnipeg Free Press and Southam News. Upon his return to Canada two years later Michael worked as a researcher at Cross Country Check-Up at CBC radio in Montreal and used that position as a launching pad for a career at CBC that included positions as an associate producer of Information Morning in Sydney, N.S., and the producer of Information Morning at CBC Moncton. MIchael moved to Halifax in 1990 with his wife Cathy after her transfer to a position with Parks Canada. Through the early 1990s he worked as radio producer for CBC in several capacities, created a business column for Halifax's Information Morning and developed his own staff position as a business writer for the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal, In 1999, he was hired as a reporter/editor at the Halifax bureau of The Canadian Press. Since then he has frequently won awards for reporting on the major stories of the region. He has been recognized for his work covering the MK Airlines cargo plane disaster in 2004, and in 2007 he revealed the full story of the safety issues that lay behind the high seas death of Laura Gainey when she was lost from the tall ship Picton Castle. In 2009, he achieved the rare distinction of winning Gold awards at the Atlantic Journalism Awards for both investigative work (on the abuse of people with intellectual disabilities) and spot news coverage. He continues to work as a journalist with The Canadian Press covering a wide range of major stories in Atlantic Canada. He is the proud father of two daughters. On weekends and during his own time, he pursues his ministry as an ordained Anglican priest through preaching, teaching and pastoring.
