About Michael Udal

I am a professionally registered Agricultural Engineer with 25 years of experience in a wide range of engineering disciplines, with both local and international experience. Prior to joining MBB, I spent a number of years with other consulting engineering firms in the fields of irrigation design, water and drainage, including time spent in the United States and Tanzania. Much of my work was spent modelling and designing irrigation, water, stormwater and drainage schemes. I have strong project management skills, having worked in dedicated project management and construction management positions. I have worked extensively with the FIDIC suite of construction contracts internationally, and with GCC within South Africa.I spent three years as Site Engineer on a large agricultural construction site in Tanzania bteween 2004 and 2006 supervising and administering construction contracts for bulk earthworks, raw water pump station construction works, pipeline installation and backfill, electrical reticulation installation and centre pivot irrigation installation over 4,000 ha of sugar cane. I also gained experience in this time with large irrigation system management and operations.Since joining MBB, I have been involved in the study, design, procurement and construction project management of a number of irrigation projects up to 25,000 ha. This has included the design and construction of dams, pump stations and pipelines, in addition to a number of studies, assessments and Dam Safety Inspections. I was a key member of the design and project management team on the Ludeke Dam, a new build 40m high Category III clay-cored rockfill dam constructed in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. The dam was completed in 2014. I am an Approved Professional Person (APP) on the South African Dam Safety Office register for Dam Safety Evaluations for embankment dams up to 29m high and for the design of new embankment dams up to 20m high. I currently lead MBB’s dam design team.I have been invited to talk at a number of symposia and short courses on aspects of dam design and hydraulic engineering, including the SANCOLD Annual Conference 2011. I am a senior design engineer in the Pietermaritzburg office of MBB and is a Director and Shareholder of the company, as well as a Shareholder of the MBB holding company MBB Services International.
