After years in education, I've taken my love of writing and passion for helping others to the nonprofit sector. At Youth Volunteer Corps, I work to pursue funding opportunities in the form of foundation grants, corporate giving, and individual donations to keep the good works going. I'm happy that the work I do helps to bring the benefits of volunteerism to young people around the world. I started my career as an English teacher, and when my students presented skills gaps I did not know how to address, I decided to pursue training in Special Education. I have a deep interest in how kids learn to read and what we can do to help them when they get stuck, and have pursued further education in reading instruction and intervention, spending a year delivering specialized reading instruction. Along the way, I had to find a way to support my students in their hardest subject -- math -- in the process, I learned to love math myself for the first time in my life and spent several years been working in math classrooms and teaching a specialized Geometry class.
