Upon graduation of U.S. Coast Guard boot camp, I did 1 year of sea duty on the Coast Guard Cutter Reliance based out of Portsmouth Naval shipyard and gained the qualifications of helmsman/lookout, gangway petty officer of the watch, boatswain mate of the watch, and crane operator. I then successfully graduated from the Coast Guard’s Marine Science Technician “A” School in Yorktown, VA and was awarded Incident Management Division, Sector New York. I attained the qualification of both Federal On-Scene Coordinator Representative (FOSCR) and Pollution Responder (PR), while attached to Sector New York. As an FOSCR/PR, I would prepare for, respond to, and managed environmental incidents on behalf of the Captain of The Port (COTP). I would create and propose, my response plan, to the COTP, taking critique and changes with stride and adaptability. I vetted and employed contractors, supervised daily operations in the field, managed resources, created and distributed detailed situation reports and action plans, tracked costs with projections, managed funding, and oversaw demobilizations. My experience as an FOSCR has taught me how to be a leader, manage resources, be personable, keep a level head, anticipate needs, and communicate efficiently. While stationed at Sector Anchorage I gained my qualification of Commercial Fishing Vessel Examiner (CFVE) and Coast Guard Facility Inspector (FI). I inspection waterfront facilities subject to 33CFR105, 126, and 154. I inspected the safety, security, and response plans as well as the operations manual, signage, firefighting equipment, oil/hazmat/hazwaste transfer equipment and monitored operations of applicable facilities and/or commercial fishing vessels. I scheduled, planned, and managed the renewal inspections for over 400 facilities in Sector Anchorage’s area of responsibility, some of which were only accessible by boat, plane, ATV, sled, sometimes a combination. In preparation for the robust commercial fishing vessel season commencing, I coordinated with 4 different regions in western Alaska and one season conducted over 140 commercial fishing vessels inspections in person. Coordinating multi-agency facility inspections in Alaska was truly a test of logistical skill. I learned the importance of preparedness and planning in Alaska. I left the Coast Guard with an honorable discharge. Since then, I’ve traveled, bartended, served, and managed restaurants. I have started taken college classes and I am using my GI bill towards a degree in marketing.
