About Michael Weitzman
My career has centered around the social and environmental determinants of child health, with a special focus on the interface of pediatrics, mental health and public health. I studied health administration at the Maxwell School and then health services research at the Harvard School of Public Health. I have been the Director of Maternal and Child Health for the City of Boston and have been a faculty member of the Harvard School of Public Health, the Boston University Schools of Medicine and School of Public Health, the University of Rochester and the New York University School of Medicine and the New York University Global Institute of Public Health, achieving the rank of tenured Professor at Boston University, the University of Rochester and New York University Schools of Medicine. I testified in the 2005 federal racketeering case against the executives of the US tobacco industry. Federal governmental service has included serving on the CDC Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Committee and the EPA's Child Scientific Advisory Committee. I also wrote the grant that resulted in the American Academy of Pediatrics' Julius Richmond Center on Children and Tobacco. My mentors have included Frank Oski, Robert Haggerty, Julius Richmond, Julius Richmond and George (Sandy) Lamb.I have published almost 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers on various aspects of child health; another 200 abstracts of scholarly work presented at scientific meetings world-wide; more than one hundred chapters in books and I have edited 5 pediatric textbooks. For my professional accomplishments I have been awarded the Research Award and the Mentoring Award from the Academic Pediatric Societies and was the first recipient of the EPA's Child Environmental Advocate Award. I am married for more than 3 decades and have 3 children.
