I teach the financial accounting and advanced financial accounting courses that form the financial reporting components of the MSc Finance and Accounting programme. Using the Framework-based teaching approach these courses provide students with a cohesive understanding of general purpose financial reporting in the private sector and the public sector, with particular focus on understanding financial reporting estimates and other judgements.

Working with development agencies, business schools, academic and professional accountancy associations and others, I develop capacity to apply with rigour and consistency international standards including: (i) International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS); (ii) the IFRS for Small and Medium-sized Entities (SMEs); (iii) International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSASs); and (iv) International Accounting Education Standards (IESs).From leading the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) Education Initiative for over a decade, and from serving on a number of international accounting education advisory groups (including IFAC IAESB CAG, IAAER Board of Advisors and the AAA Education Committee), I have unique insight into international standards and effective methods of developing the ability to apply those standards with rigour and consistency. In particular, I specialise in developing capacity to understand/make/audit/regulate the judgements necessary to apply IFRS, the IFRS for SMEs and IPSASs. These services are provided in a variety of formats ranging from intensive one-day workshops to longer-term capacity building projects and courses.

As leader of the IFRS Education Initiative my responsibilities included leading the development and delivery of the Education Initiative's plans. The flagship project aimed to support those teaching IFRS to develop their students' ability to make the judgements and estimates necessary to apply IFRS. The IFRS case studies and most of the other teaching materials have been translated by others into all widely spoken languages and are free to download from the IASB's website.Other education projects that I led included projects focused on regulatory capacity building particularly in emerging and developing economies and on supporting the implementation and consistent application of the IFRS for Small and Medium-sized Entities (SMEs).All of the projects I led involve working with others that share an interest in developing IFRS capacity, for example, development agencies and academic and professional accounting associations. In particular, these collaborations have resulted in me facilitating nearly one hundred, often regional, multi-day innovative IFRS workshops. The workshops were mainly for those teaching/training others to make the judgements necessary to apply IFRS. Separate multi-day workshops were also facilitated for those regulating IFRS particularly in emerging and developing economies. Another series of workshops provided support to preparers and auditors in those jurisdictions preparing to use IFRS for the first time.

My teaching responsibilities focused mainly on teaching financial reporting to senior undergraduate and postgraduate students in courses accredited by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants for entry to professional qualifying examinations (CA stream students).Innovations in financial reporting teaching that I led included introducing a significant mandatory group assignment requiring students to: (i) analyse financial statements for compliance with financial reporting requirements; (ii) prepare financial forecasts for the entity including sensitivity analysis or key variables identified by the group; and (iii) in a formal presentation to their peers, advise whether to buy, hold or sell the entity's shares. the group that achieved the highest grade for the project was awarded a cash prize from one of the biggest accounting firms.

South Africa

I qualified as a South African Chartered Accountant after completing the practical experience requirements with EY. I then became Senior Manager on the audit of a diverse portfolio of clients, mainly in the manufacturing and agriculture sectors. I was also seconded to work out of the firm's Detroit, United States office for three months. While a Senior Manager at EY I also lectured in Auditing to undergraduate CA stream students at the University of Natal.
