Life Safety Code Supervisor
I am the Life Safety Code Supervisor for the Department of Public Health (DPH) within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. My role involves leading a highly specialized and dedicated team to complete CMS required surveys for a wide range of health care facilities here in the commonwealth.
Emergency Services Specialist, Public Fire Protection
As an Emergency Services Specialist, my work is centered on preparing and coordinating materials for committee consideration in the updating of NFPA Standards. In doing so, I capture the intent of technical discussions and facilitate the production of a final document that captures both industry and technological advancements. Another aspect of my role involves providing guidance on queries and questions relating to changes or the application of such Standards. In this way, I have the opportunity to further aid the first responder community and be part of the application of NFPA Standards. Through the development of multiple education sessions, I have had the opportunity to provide training to fire departments all over the world, including multiple states in the U.S.A, a variety of Countries in Europe, and as far east as India. I am also very fortunate that I can promote and market NFPA Standards as great mechanisms to help safeguard life and prevent fire loss. My duties involve attending trade shows, conferences, and trainings at both a national and international level. I work with the following Committees and Standards on all such fronts:Fire Investigations• NFPA 921, Guide for Fire and Explosion InvestigationsFire Investigator Professional Qualifications• NFPA 1033, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire InvestigatorPre-Incident Planning• NFPA 1620, Standard for Pre-Incident PlanningUnmanned Aerial Systems• NFPA 2400, Standard for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) used by Emergency Response Departments and Personnel Emergency Service Organization Risk Management• NFPA 1201, Standard for Providing Fire and Emergency Services to the Public• NFPA 1250, Recommended Practice in Fire and Emergency Service Organization Risk Management
Assistant Secretary, Nfpa Standards Council
As the Assistant Secretary, I acted as an engineer with the Codes and Standards Division of the NFPA. Primarily, I was involved in preparing and consolidating information for new and existing Standards Council projects. In doing so, I worked as a neutral facilitator with the Council on new project requests and new standards related activities, appeals and hearings on contentious issues within a particular code set, general complaints relating to the NFPA process and the consideration of committee membership for standards development. Part of my duties involved working with the Policies & Procedures Task Group, a sub group of the Council which prepares and presents revisions to NFPA Regulations. These are the guiding documents of the NFPA, which ensure that standards development activities meet all ANSI Essential Requirements. My duties also involved working with the NFPA Codes & Standards team through ANSI related disputes with other SDOs. Political awareness and interacting with other SDOs was a basic daily function, and a responsibility which allowed for great interaction across the entire SDO industry.
Associate Engineer
As an Associate Engineer, my role was very project specific. I would take on detailed issues relating to the Council or the NFPA Standards development process and research them thoroughly. I investigated the assignment of committee operations, previous Council decisions, changes in regulations or balloting procedures or any combination thereof. I produced detailed reports for the entire NFPA membership, such as the Annual Motions Committee Report. Acting as a neutral facilitator, I worked with the Motions Committee, a sub group of the Council responsible for reviewing and certifying motions that can be pursued at our Annual Meeting. This report is used by over 300 people who actively debate the possible ramifications of different code changes via a parliamentary style process. I also provided live webinars and training for the event. This is just one of the many public forums in which I played an active role in meeting the needs of the entire NFPA membership.
Architectural Technologist
While working for EML Architects, I enjoyed taking a lead role on a variety of fire safety projects. I worked with a team of technical experts from various backgrounds within our office and a collection enforcement officials outside of the practice to complete community based projects. This included fire designs and permits for sports facilities, as well as the upgrading of fire safety measures in public healthcare establishments. My project management role in private developments was a great experience. My responsibilities included managing projects on site, fielding technical questions, coordinating the design team and producing technical solutions for issues that arose during development. In this capacity, I worked on a variety of residential and commercial developments. Attention to detail was always a core aspect of making any of my projects at EML truly successful.
