About Michael Zaretsky
I am an Associate Professor and Architecture Department Head in the School of Architecture and the Environment in the College of Design at the University of Oregon. I was an associate professor in civil engineering at the university of Texas at Arlington with a focus on bridging architecture and engineering. I was the director of the architectural engineering program and also involved in university initiatives addressing sustainability, community engagement and design/build. I am still a Research Professor at UTA in Civil Engineering. From 2016-18 I was an Associate Dean in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati, as well as an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture and Interior Design (SAID) in DAAP, Director of the MetroLAB Design/Build Program and a practicing, licensed Architect. My research is focused around culturally, economically, technologically and environmentally responsive public interest design projects and community engagement with underserved communities. My published work includes Precedents in Zero-Energy Design: Architecture and Passive Design in the 2007 Solar Decathlon (Routledge Press, 2009) and New Directions in Sustainable Design, with Dr. Adrian Parr (Routledge Press, 2010). In addition, I have had several articles published in architectural journals and presented at conferences around the world on Sustainability, Humanitarian Design and Public Interest Design. I am presently working on a book that explores how international design/build projects engage those in underprivileged communities where they are working. My practice and research includes my role as Director of Design for the Roche Health Center in rural Tanzania, a project of Village Life Outreach Project. Roche Health Center is the first–ever permanent health care facility in this region. The Roche Health Center opened April 1, 2011 and provides health care to as many as 20,000 villagers.
Listed skills include Architectural Design, Community Outreach, Architecture, Academic Administration, and 2 others.

CurrentRoche Health Center Design Director
CurrentThe Roche Health Center project began in 2008 when the community of Roche identified the need for a permanent health care facility as a primary goal for the village of Roche, a community of approximately 5000 people with no permanent power, minimal access to water or sanitation and a history of unsafe buildings in a seismic zone of sub-saharan Africa.Working with faculty, students and consultants from the University of Cincinnati and beyond, Village Life Outreach Project and UC worked directly with our partners in Tanzania and the community of Roche to develop an approach to safe, comfortable and beautiful construction that could be replicated by anyone in the community. The clinic opened on April 1, 2011 and subsequent buildings have been added to support the operation of the health clinic. Thousands of patients have been served and impacted by the Roche Health Center project.
