About Michaela B.

Born and raised in Colorado, Michaela Butler is a graduate student at the University of Colorado at Denver, where she is pursuing a Master of Science in Environmental Science. Michaela has always been passionate about the environment and how humans interact with it. However, it wasn't until she realized the political and societal disconnect between activism and policy, that she found her niche. As a First-Generation Student she decided to pursue a dual bachelor’s degree in political science - Public Policy and Geography - Environment, Society and Sustainability. In college, she became the president of the Students for Sustainability and Conservation club and later a Student Government Senator co-chair of the tri-institutional Student Government on the Auraria Campus. As a first-generation college student, she has overcome many challenges and obstacles to achieve her academic goals, receiving multiple awards for her academic excellence and leadership. Although still early in her career, Michaela has achieved many remarkable things as a sustainability specialist. Formerly an Environmental Sustainability Intern at the world’s third busiest airport - The Denver International Airport. Michaela was instrumental in the creation of the Tri-Institutional Composting Referendum on the Auraria Campus. A campaign that expanded the budget for the Auraria Campus Sustainability Program to provide campus-wide composting services. Designed Green Event Planning and Procurement within her SGA, and encouraged sustainable thinking and design in every project she was a part of. She has been a part of both nonprofit and local coalitions for sustainable community action and is currently and active member on the Wheat Ridge Sustainability Committee.Michaela has a wide range of skills and expertise in environmental sustainability, including but not limited to using GIS and data analysis, collecting data and writing scientific reports. She has technical and policy knowledge of environmental regulations and local business practices. She also has skills in conducting GHG emissions assessments, audits and evaluations, especially for airports. She has skills in promoting sustainability initiatives, campaigns and events to various audiences.Michaela is not only a working professional, but also a person with a zest for life! She loves hiking with her dogs, being artistic and experiencing the world. She believes that sustainability is not only a career, but also a lifestyle and a mindset. She is always open to new challenges and opportunities to learn and grow.
