Michaela is starting her final year of the Primary Care Paramedic program at Fanshawe College in London Ontario, continuing her education on how to manage medical emergencies in the pre-hospital setting. Through the program she has become confident in communicating with patients and managing medical conditions.Michaela first became interested in becoming a paramedic after working as a lifeguard for several years and interacting with paramedics in various situations. After graduating high school, she went into the Pre-service Firefighting program at Conestoga College before applying to the Paramedic program. After graduating with honours from Conestoga College she continued onto the Paramedic program at Fanshawe College the following year.To gain experience with working shift work and communicating with grieving families Michaela worked with CALL Removal Services as a body removal technician. Michaela also improved her communication skills by working as a swimming instructor. She taught a wide variety of ages and skill levels. She also had to maintain the safety of patrons and perform basic first aid tasks.Along with her passion for first response Michaela spends most of her free time playing rugby or coaching rugby, as well as camping and spending time outdoors. Michaela has been playing rugby for the past seven years and has been representing the province in rugby for the past 4 years. Michaela also captained the women's rugby team at Conestoga College for both years she was there and has earned numerous awards. Some of the awards she has earned are OCAA rookie of the year 2016, Most valuable player of the year 2016/2017, All-academic athlete 2016/2017, and Most outstanding graduating female athlete from high school 2016.Michaela will graduate in April 2020 and is looking for work as a paramedic in southern Ontario.
