This telephone- based nation- wide service provides information, advice and referrals to clients on family issues. Client enquiries can include, but is not limited to, those issues surrounding: separation and divorce; child safety; domestic violence and mental health. Role Involved: Adopting a client- focused approach; Engaging in ethical practice in line with Relationships Australia Queensland Code of Ethics; Working collaboratively with clients; Utilisation of active- listening, reflection and clarification skills when communicating with clients; Validation of clients emotions and experience; Gentle- challenging and reality checking where appropriate; Engaging in child- focused practice as children are vulnerable and may be at risk; Empowering clients by providing them with information, advice and appropriate referrals based upon their enquiry; Having knowledge of relevant procedures (for example- Legal Assistance Service, Telephone Dispute Resolution Service; Mediation etc.); Providing psychoeducation to clients where required; On occasion engaging with escalated clients who are distressed; Continuous Risk assessment and risk- management; Engaging in safety- planning where required; Making child- safety reports to relevant authorities in Australia when necessary; Obtaining an interpreter for clients where necessary; Engaging in reflective practice; Approaching supervisors for assistance when required; Engaging in continuous personal and professional development through partaking in weekly supervision.

In 2016 I completed my Honours thesis (a component of my Bachelor of Psychological Science degree) under the supervision of Dr Lucia Colodro- Conde at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute (QIMR). As part of my thesis I conducted an investigation into the relationship between women suffering Nausea and Vomiting during Pregnancy (NVP) and developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. I performed a number of statistical analyses to identify risk- factors for those women with NVP developing PTSD symptoms. Results identified a number of risk and protective factors. The identification of these factors has a number of potential implications and could change the way medical professionals approach NVP- related PTSD and also how they prevent and treat this condition. Ultimately, it is hoped that the results of this study may contribute to minimising the suffering and extensive impacts experienced by those with NVP- related PTSD. For this Honours thesis submission I received a High Distinction. I was then invited to return to QIMR in 2017 as a paid Research Assistant to turn my Honours thesis into a manuscript to be submitted for potential publication in a scientific journal. I am presently awaiting feedback following the submission of this manuscript. Working as a research assistant has involved several skills and responsibilities. Including:- Designing my own research project.- Extensively researching scientific sources (i.e. peer- reviewed journals).- Utilising research to help formulate hypotheses. - Working with and managing a large data set (utilising “SPSS Statistics- version 22”). - Performing missing data assessment and data cleaning. - Formulating a data analysis plan.- Performing data analyses (via SPSS).- Interpreting output of data analyses to arrive at logical, evidence- based conclusions.- Communicating effectively with supervisors. - Maintaining a reference library using referencing software “Endnote.”
