  • Port Moody Aquarians

Port Moody Aquarians May 2009 - Aug 2016
    Port Moody
I come from an aquatic-loving family, and was registered as a British Columbia Summer Swimming Association Member (BCSSA) when I was only three hours old. After spending my youth training and competing, I began volunteer coaching as a pre-teen. Soon after, I became a paid swim coach with the Port Moody Aquarians. I worked in the water with youth ages 3-16, leading drills and providing stroke correction. During my last few summers, I led my own group of swimmers. This responsibility included: long-term seasonal planning; short-term practice planning; tracking splits at swim meets throughout the season; communicating with parents; supporting coach development; and (of course) developing positive relationships with my swimmers.Ultimately, it was my connection to the incredible young athletes I worked with that energized me summer after summer. I created several initiatives with my group to foster a supportive competitive environment, including a weekly goal sheet to fill out at home with parents and a weekly challenge set where we tracked progressions over the summer.
  • Students' Representative Council (Quest)
    Secretary
Students' Representative Council (Quest) Sep 2014 - Apr 2016
    Squamish, Bc
As SRC Secretary, I was responsible for attending every weekly funding meeting and typing up verbatim meeting minutes. These minutes would be cross-referenced with my recording of meeting for any items requiring clarification, and then posted to the SRC website. I also sent weekly email updates to the entire university student body regarding key meeting items. At the beginning of my tenure, I recognized that most students didn't read these emails, and decided to change my approach to engage a wider audience. I began making pop culture references or embedding jokes throughout the email as incentive to read all of the updates. Although there was no SRC-sanctioned way to track whether these changes made a difference, my emails were suddenly mentioned on our campus Yik-Yak as a weekly highlight.
