The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) accelerates the adoption of leading commercial technology into the military. We’re working to implement commercial solutions that can transform how the Defense Department operates or its capabilities such as using artificial intelligence for predictive maintenance to improve the uptime and cost of maintenance for military aircraft.As a White House Presidential Innovation Fellow, I worked at DIUx (Defense Innovation Unit Experimental, www.diux.mil) as the co-author of a report on the level of foreign investment in early stage technology ventures. Additionally, I supported passage of the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act (FIRRMA) and led an initiative for a Defense Department investment vehicle for dual-use hardware technologies called National Security Innovation Capital. Both were signed into law in August, 2018.As President and CEO of Symantec, the world’s leading cybersecurity firm, we refocused the company on its core business of security (and in the process sold Veritas and returned the proceeds to shareholders). We developed and articulated a new unified security strategy leveraging Symantec's key strength of understanding more about the global threat environment than any other company in the world. I recruited a new executive team and continued to change our business model to include more subscription services (security-as-a-service) deployed from the cloud. I joined Symantec's Board of Directors following the company's merger with Veritas Software in July 2005, and previously served as Chairman and CEO of Quantum Corporation. In addition, I serve on the Board of Trustees for the Berklee College of Music (Boston) and in my spare time I play keyboards with the Wildcats, a classic rock dance band which has raised over $150,000 for local public schools.
