About Michael Cohen

I still vividly remember the first time I went to a festival in the streets when I was growing up. It was a delicious, topsy-turvy world: neighbours had brought their lounge room furniture onto the footpaths, weird and wonderful artists took over the roads and friends and strangers danced and laughed in each other’s company. That experience really hit home and I decided my life’s pursuit would be turning cities and towns upside down with art.I am now an Australian artistic leader with 25 years’ creative execution of cultural projects and festivals in Australia and abroad as an arts producer and practitioner. I am a highly accomplished key programmer of innovative, creative and compelling multi-arts content. My extensive experience in high profile events and festival programming includes main stage and contemporary forms, cross-sector and community cultural development projects, and diverse urban and regional arts activities. Specialities: • Artistic leadership from conception to realization• Capacity to articulate and communicate a distinctive vision • Astute understanding of the cultural sector• Excellent appraisal of festival communities, audiences and stakeholders, • High-level management and team building skills, • Stakeholder advocacy: arts communities, audiences, Government, sponsors and donors• Strong business acumen, • Site-based arts and cultural projects,• Innovative arts-driven place-making and interpretation,• Cross-sector arts labsI founded City People in 2017 and you can see our work at www.citypeople.com.au
