While leading Microsoft's partner-facing engineering team in Windows, I also managed Microsoft’s first party PC hardware group and led the design and development of a wide range of peripherals including gaming devices, keyboards and mice. I re-purposed this team - with a new secret charter and identity - to build a disruptive and innovative new product line, Microsoft’s first entry into the computing hardware space, Microsoft Surface. These products included Surface RT, Surface Pro, TouchCover and TypeCover. They were developed with an unprecedented level of confidentiality and resulted in a variety of industry firsts, including the thinnest keyboard and the largest liquid injected molded magnesium parts ever made. We shipped the lightest and most powerful tablet than had ever been created and we ultimately developed new leaders, built a healthy culture, delivered a multi-billion-dollar franchise for Microsoft and restored profitable growth to our Windows PC partners.I was invited to share this history as part of the Harvey Mudd College Annenberg Speaker Series, Disrupt Yourself, and delivered Engineering Change in the PC Industry: The Story of Microsoft Surface.After establishing the Microsoft Surface franchise, I moved to the newly formed Microsoft Devices Group to lead the hardware engineering teams for Xbox and Perceptive Pixel. Over the next two years we delivered a wide range of innovative and popular devices including the Xbox One S, the most powerful and smallest Xbox console ever, and the Surface Hub, with the biggest touchscreen ever built.

In 2008 Microsoft Vista era laptops were losing quality and performance reviews to Apple products. I formed a team to collaborate with a range of industry partners from our OEMs (HP, Dell, and Lenovo, and other PC makers), to our software partners (ISVs), to the Silicon partners (Intel, Nvidia, Qualcomm, and TI) to create programs to create more competitive PCs. These included Logo, WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) programs, various financial and go-to-market investments, and technical conferences such as WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering Conference) at which I was one of the Keynote speakers. These were challenging relationships, with complex histories, legal structures, varied company and national cultures, extreme technical challenges, incompatible timelines, and with billions of dollars of revenue at stake. After four years of investment and progress, my team partnered with Intel to create a new class of PCs called Ultrabooks which, combined with Windows 7, met or exceeded all competitive benchmarks for performance and value. We also drove adoption of touch screen notebooks, mobile broadband standards, and other elements of the Microsoft technical agenda for the Windows Ecosystem.

Microsoft Project Business Leadership • UMT Acquisition • Partner Ecosystems My first general leadership role at Microsoft was my introduction to end to end business ownership. I was responsible for the Microsoft Project business which at the time was focused on the tracking and calculation of critical path and six sigma projects. Over the course of four years I was responsible for making a significant change in the product positioning by acquiring an innovative company called United Management Technologies (UMT) which developed a portfolio management solution. By integrating that product and market position with Project we moved into the Leaders Quadrant in the Gartner analysis of the PPM category which resulted in doubling our annual revenue. As a result, we became the team with the highest revenue per engineer at Microsoft. This was my first experience with acquisition, negotiating field targets and sales quotas and directly managing all engineering disciplines (testing, software development, and program management). The project management industry is supported by many specialty consulting companies that train and apply best practices for specific industries. To engage with this community, I ran the Microsoft Project conference as well as participated in the opening of a variety of Microsoft Project Association chapters around the US. I am proud of the impact I had on this industry and the respect I earned through transparent, principled and productive partner engagements. Nearly 10 years after leaving this role, I maintain trusted and productive relationships with the leaders of these companies. For example, the CEO of one of our biggest partners recently invited me to the Technical Advisory Board for his new digital transformation company, Envorso.com, where I continue to serve today.

It was shown by Bill Gates in his 1994 Comdex Keynote address. I then joined Microsoft Research where I helped develop the user experience for what became our operating system for Pocket PCs.My full-time career began in the Office organization as a full time Program Manager just before Microsoft acquired Vermeer, a startup which had invented an innovative web site editing and management product called FrontPage. I was selected to be the first Program Manager to join the team and within a year was promoted to my first management position. I was responsible for the feature specification and release planning and management. We shipped six versions of FrontPage in three years which gave me significant public exposure to both the web authoring community and top tier press through launch events, technical demos and interviews. During this time, I was listed as an inventor on several foundational patents on new web authoring technologies. While in this role, I earned my M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington. My thesis, Design and Development of Personal Computer Software: A Case Study, related the techniques I learned in Axiomatic Design to the new design problems facing software engineering. After graduating I was invited back on several occasions by Profession Vipin Kumar to be a guest lecturer in his Engineering class.
