About Michael Uehara

Hospitality and Hotel Management In 1996, I assumed complete responsibility for the operation of King Pacific Lodge. Through sustainable business practices I have guided this unique luxury destination to international acclaim for its unparalleled guest experience, culminating in from “Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report” and “Condé Nast.” Sustainable Business Practices and Triple Bottom Line I strive to be a leader in Ecotourism and Culture Friendly tourism and I am an expert in sustainable business practices in the hospitality and tourist industry. As president and CEO of King Pacific Lodge I have demonstrated that a world class hotel can be a steward of the environment, work with and for the benefit of its indigenous First Nations neighbors, and make a profit. I am a proponent of what is often referred to as ecotourism, sustainable business, and the triple-bottom-line. I believes that it is just good business.First Nations I established a working protocol with the Gitga’at people, the first between a First Nation and a private company in British Columbia. I conceived and launched Tsimshian Tourism Inc., piloting a new model for First Nations ownership and control of tourism product and participation in the tourism economy. Finally, as a sign of mutual respect and fondness I had the deep honor of being adopted by the Gitga’at Nation. Ecotourism I am commitment to sustainable business practices and a triple bottom line business philosophy. I worked with NGOs, BC and Canadian officials, the forestry industry, and First Nation communities to help create the Great Bear Rainforest – a protected area the size of Switzerland that won the World Wildlife Fund’s 2007 “Gift to the Earth” award. I had the honor of being the founding vice president of the Wilderness Tourism Association.

For 90% of their life cycle these scallops require no human-supplied food--truly a zero-input system. Coastal Shellfish long-lines are suspended in the water column and cause highly limited bottom disturbance. Coastal Shellfish Corporation has been endorsed by Dr. David Suzuki for its sustainable shellfish production and for its carbon sequestration. Indeed, carbon sequestration in bi-valve shells is considered to be one of the most efficient carbon capture methods.Coastal Shellfish currently employs 30 full-time, year round employees. When the single site in Prince Rupert is fully operational, Coastal Shellfish will have over 100 full time employees. Then as now, over 70% of whom will be First Nations. Our scallop farms provide profit and employment to First Nations communities in a green economy that produces delicious, high-value, pure sustainable seafood. Uehara has complete responsibility for the operation of King Pacific Lodge, A Rosewood Resort. A firm believer in sustainable business practices that benefit the triple bottom line Michael has established the lodge as the ultimate in luxury adventure travel and ecotourism. Located in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest on the west cost of British Columbia, Canada, King Pacific Lodge was selected as the best Resort in Canada by Condé Nast Readers’ Choice Awards in 2008 and 2009. Beginning with his search in the mid-1990s for the perfect location to establish a wilderness lodge for Honolulu-based Morita Co., Inc., the owner of King Pacific Lodge, he brought a vision to the project that has underlined its success. His vision epitomizes the goals of triple bottom line and sustainable businesses: offer Five Diamond service, dining, comforts and activities; create a breathtaking experience in awe-inspiring wilderness not duplicated anywhere else; and be an uncompromising steward of this spectacular land and supporter of conservancy while developing a close and supportive working relationship with its indigenous First Nations people. Thus he positioned the lodge from the outset as an example of ecotourism and as a culture-friendly business and would not allow the undermining of the natural habitat and traditional indigenous lifestyle that often accompanies the development of tourism. He became a leading regional activist working with several organizations as well as the British Columbia government to establish a protected area here, which was realized in February 2006 with the creation of a 4.4 million acre park called the Great Bear Rainforest with the lodge at its heart.
