I’m an Applied Scientist/Engineer. I drive progress through data-driven decision making by asking insightful questions, finding answers with data and code, and communicating widely.I've spent most of my career as a Software Engineer and early adopter of many technologies: I built my first website in 1993 with the NCSA Mosaic beta, my first Java app in 1994 when it was still called Oak, C# app in 2000 when it was still called Cool and Microsoft-internal, Xbox 360 app in 2004 while we were creating the hardware, Facebook and iPhone apps before those platforms publicly launched. I launched a machine learning model in JavaScript on amazon.com in 2011 and continue to work on ML/AI projects. In 2010, John Rauser and I created the Data Scientist ladder at Amazon (today called "Applied Scientist") and I hired their first two. We envisioned it as software engineering *plus* applied statistics, machine learning, and experimentation.Building the future with science and software is my dream job, one I'm fortunate to have been doing the past decade at NASA, Microsoft, Yahoo, Amazon, Microsoft again, Google, and now Meta.
