Profile bio

About Michael Becker

Over the past several years, I've dedicated myself to developing and implementing cohesive sustainability strategies in various contexts, leading to some lessons. Understanding the local context is always a challenge when implementing sustainable solutions. For many years, I worked in the Pantanal — the world’s largest wetland — to develop a market for organic cattle ranching. Our 'clients' were cattle ranchers, and we needed to bridge the gap between environmental conservation and the livelihoods of those dependent on ranching. We achieved this by fostering market access and highlighting the ranchers' role in maintaining the natural landscape. Now, cattle rancher associations have their own brand and market presence. This uncommon partnership between environmentalists and ranchers succeeded by aligning common interests. As Conservation Director at WWF-Brasil, I led and supported innovative approaches across five programs and one major initiative. The Brasil Water Initiative, supported by Banco do Brasil and Fundação Banco do Brasil, was a key crosscutting effort in which I played a leading role. The diversity of team members and partners was a significant strength, helping us achieve lasting solutions. My main role was to promote collaboration, maximize staff talent, and generate ideas while maintaining focus. As the leading manager of the Regional Implementation Team for the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund at IEB, the diversity of projects and stakeholders became even more pronounced. We managed 64 projects across the 2 million km² of the Brazilian Cerrado Hotspot, involving local communities, quilombola communities, indigenous communities, coffee farmers, and NGOs. Each contributed to the Cerrado Strategy, offering a glimpse into a multitude of different realities. This experience was invaluable, providing a unique perspective on diverse initiatives and their impacts. For me, the design and implementation of well-informed sustainability strategies rely on the following:• Considering the local conditions but thinking and acting globally;• Developing concrete long-term objectives supported by practical operations; • A strong and motivated team;• Listening and adapting to changing realities.I would love to make new professional acquaintances and contribute to formulating innovative sustainable solutions.

Listed skills include Environmental Management Systems, Sustainability, Hydrology, Environmental Issues, and 45 others.

Executive Director

Current

Brasília, Federal District, Brazil

Over the past two years, I've devoted much of my time to investing in Nature Invest, Brazil's pioneering crowdfunding platform for social and environmental projects. This platform empowers small projects to raise funds and showcase their solutions to Brazilian audiences and internationally. Projects can be initiated by small NGOs or individuals and funded by large private companies or contributors. Nature Invest provides opportunities for small initiatives to showcase themselves, funds to support promising proposals that may not otherwise secure funding, regional initiatives to build a fundraising portfolio, and small businesses to pledge support for impactful projects. You can explore one of our ongoing projects at https://nat.re/acovida.

Lecturer In Esg | Reportings, Indicator, Esg Ratings, And Sdg

Brasília, Federal District, Brazil

During the reporting, ESG ratings, indicators, and SDG course, I had the opportunity to lecture in two different semesters on some of the basic concepts of environmental economics, like externalities, risk mitigation, circular economy, and growth limits. This discussion was refined, introducing the need to reformulate consistent and transparent indicators and how to formulate them. The GRI standards were depicted and translated, and several SCR reports were analyzed regarding their adherence to this standard. The SDGs were analyzed and put into the context of ESG. Furthermore, the framework and report landscape - e.g., TCFD, TNFD, SBTi, CDP, EFRAG - was described.
