The Ups and Downs of Almost Dying (ISBN: 978-1-7750928-0-3) is the autobiography of Kieran Block as told to Michael Belzil. To purchase: http://theupsanddownsofalmostdying.bigcartel.com/Published in August 2017, the story centers on Kieran's emotional and physical recovery in the eight years following a cliff jumping accident that nearly killed him. Along the way, the story touches on Paralympic hockey, disability politics, the opioid crisis, and coping with trauma—both successfully and unsuccessfully. We also talk about flamingos, saffron, satellites, and a gold-plated Italian revolver, to name a few. The book, inspired by Malcolm Gladwell, has a prominent Pop Sci element that approaches Kieran's story from unexpected angles. When these seemingly unrelated tangents finally tie in to the main narrative, they act as access points for readers who are often unable to relate to Kieran's experiences on a literal level. We've also found that this approach helps to circumvent some of the preconceptions that readers have when picking up a story like this, having seen so many clichés in popular culture.
