In the past 20 years I have been instrumental in helping companies to the completion of critical, complex software products. I day-to-day manage dev and test teams, review code, product plans/roadmaps/designs, give input on hiring and conduct performance reviews. I communicate, build consensus, improve processes as needed and marshal teams towards success, mentoring and coaching. I work to ensure that everyone who is in a meeting truly understands how the discussion pertains to them, and what we need to focus on to succeed. It takes humility, vision and tenacity. Like it or not, the world of software creation is full of turmoil. As a result, good people can burrow into a niche and hang on, avoiding change and spurious blame. Draconian schedules (that they had no real input into) may hang over their heads: team cohesion and direction in this environment needs real effort. Training and documentation become out of date. There is more and more dependency on third party systems, cloud and code generators. But guess what: these are produced by companies with the same problems you're having. All the while the global cybersecurity effort is non-stop.

Technical ManagerAol 1993 - 2006Dulles, Va.I was working as a software engineer for PLS, an innovative information retrieval software company in Rockville, MD, when it was acquired by AOL. AOL was growing rapidly at the time and it was an extremely fast paced and dynamic environment. I worked to build software in C++ that handled newsfeeds and their automated classification, publishing and index for search, and then managed a team that applied similar information profiling and processing techniques to create software that would identify unwanted email occuring in AOL's immense incoming and outgoing email streams. I was fortunate enough to have a large team of talented people assigned to accomplish the anti spam filtering system. Some interesting technologies were developed and acquired, includingtwo types of adaptive filtering system. I was fortunate enough to be able to present the planned architecture and a description of how i had planned to partition the problem among the 13 developers that were on the project so that it would be delivered in 6 months. This was laid out to a roomful of senior technical management and architects. They expressed skepticism. It was delivered on time. Thereafter, additional refinements and capabilities were added, with requirements coming from Operations and Product. I made it sound rosy, it was not all rosy, but it was a very exciting time in many ways.
