As a volunteer with the Valpo Surf Project, Michael worked with young people in impoverished coastal communities where families struggle with the consequences of violent crime, prevalent drug use, and chronic unemployment. Michael and the Valpo Surf Project used surfing instruction and academic mentoring to encourage English language skills, personal character development, and environmental consciousness among underprivileged and at-risk youth in Valparaíso, Chile.
