About Michael Brouwer

Since 2008 I have studied the transfer of various types of mobile genetic elements between pathogenic and commensal bacteria which facilitates the exchange of antibiotic resistance genes. The mechanism of transfer, regulation and genetics of these element are of specific interest to me.Reviewer of scientific journals: Mobile Genetic Elements, Frontiers in Microbiology.Grant review: British Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.Professional memberships: ASM since 2014, KNVM since 2010, SGM since 2008.

Enterobacteriaceae carrying plasmids that encode ESBLs are a growing problem for hospital settings and in animals grown for meat production. Particular types of ESBLs are more common than others and are often encoded on specific types of plasmids. Through plasmid sequencing and functional screening the success of some of these combinations are studied in Escherichia coli.
