About Michael Bruening
Since spring of 1999, I have been a GIS Analyst/Technician/Manager specializing in small scale to large scale mapping database systems. These databases are used for a variety of modeling efforts which range from 3-D groundwater contamination plumes to predictive modeling of archaeological sites to spatial analysis. I have experience with internet mapping applications which are used to view, query, and perform spatial analysis of project data. I have a strong background in developing mobile GIS applications which have integrated GPS data collection solutions using ESRI and EOS Positioning GPS products, My work experience has allowed me to collaborate with Environmental, Ecological, Archaeological, Geotechnical, Water Resource, and Engineering sectors of the business on a daily basis.Specialties: Mobile GIS and GPS data collection/processing, database creation and design, 3D modeling of spatial data, and other GIS analysis.
Listed skills include Gis, Gps, Arcgis, Environmental Awareness, and 17 others.

Geographic Information Systems Manager
As a GIS Manager at ESI, I managed multiple large-scale/multi-year projects for multiple different clients. I spent most of my time developing the digital data collection capabilities that is utilized in most of ESI field surveys. I was tasked with converting the paper datasheets; used to capture a variety of information within the field by biologist, into digital relational databases. This would allow biologist to submit this data through either Collector for ArcGIS or Survey123 for ArcGIS into a cloud-based management system known as ArcGIS Online. While I had created a series of digital databases that allow the biologist to submit the typically collected data, there was a need to create the processing tools that would provide the information for report writers to create the reports. This included creating tools to process the data into excel spreadsheets, exporting digital photos, and to create digital datasheets from this data. This was first achieved with some “out of the box” ESRI tools/reports, but later transcended into an automated system utilizing Survey123 for ArcGIS and a web-based service. The creation of the datasheets and report materials while using Survey123 for ArcGIS lead to an automated system that would create every aspect of the report, except the report itself. I had programmed a web-based utility that would receive the data digitally. This utility would then process the data into excel files for report tables, word/pdf documents for field data sheets, and images for the photo appendices. This information was then stored directly into a OneDrive system for easy access and filing.I help establish the Drone program at ESI by advising on brand of drone, computer setup for processing imagery, and software needed to compress the imagery. This drone will allow ESI to capture data in a completely new fashion.
Project Consultant (Gis)
As the Cincinnati GIS office lead, I managed project needs for both in and out-of-house clients on a daily basis. These needs ranged from providing small report figures for Phase I and Jurisdictional Waters reports to using more advanced mapping applications to create flood inundation modeling data or 3D contamination plumes from lab data. These modeling efforts support managers in recommending the best solutions for project needs.Additionally, I maintain hand held GPS technology for the office. This entails creating background base maps, waypoints for navigation, downloading, differentially correcting, and exporting GPS data into a usable format. Occasionally, there are needs for trouble shooting errors and applying routine maintenance for upgrading firmware and software.Occasionally, I work with AutoCAD to complete simple details and drawings and transfer GIS data to and from AutoCAD drawings.
Geosystems Specialists (Gis)
I began as GIS Technician completing small projects & daily GIS data editing & map production. Within 3 years I was promoted to lead GIS analyst and was responsible for coordinating project workflows to meet deadlines, maintain budgets, & provide quality control.I worked mostly with Environmental, Ecological, & Cultural Resources groups within the company. I helped design large database systems for the cultural resources group to house thousands of Sample Loci Test Point locations which were then populated with analytical data to produce report figures & aid in predictive modeling. My work with the Ecological group involved the creation of GIS databases for most aspects of the “waters of the United States” permitting efforts. These databases where used for report information & figure generation. I mostly dealt with corridor or military installation work. I have between 2,000 -3,000 miles of corridor project type work. I used internal/external ESRI ArcIMS websites to help disseminate pertinent project information to all parties involved. These websites would allow for the sharing & downloading of project data.My work with the Environmental group involved a lot of 3D modeling effort for groundwater & soil contamination. One project in particular was a metal processing plant that had issues with exceedance of the NPDES permits. I had to reconstruct the underground sewer/stormwater network within a real-time true 3D model. Once that was complete the compile legacy groundwater data & recent groundwater sampling data to create a ground water contamination plume. This plume showed where the underground sewer/storm system interacted, which part of the system that lead to the exceeding outfall. By using a down-hole camera, it was discovered that groundwater was infiltrating the sewer/storm system. Repairs were made & the exceedance stopped.
Gis Tech/Intern
During my time with the Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission (HCRPC), I completed small projects, data editing tasks, and layout creation. My time spent here was a valuable learning experience and helped give me an insight to an enterprise level GIS system. I was assigned 3 different projects and was tasked with creating map layouts that would be used within public meetings.
