Reporting into the Head of Security Engineering, Michael's primary focus is providing the leadership of the technical delivery on major security transformation initiatives, including Zero Trust Network Access, Essential Eight and Identity Transformation and to align the Technology Roadmap to the Cyber Security Strategy and delivery of required technical programs of work.Key Achievements• Developed the implementation roadmap for the enablement of the Microsoft technologies made available through the purchase of E5 licensing across Telstra.• Acted as the single point of contact/focus for the enablement of the Microsoft security technologies across Telstra (specifically Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and Microsoft Defender for Identity).• Delivered a cloud identity solution to support the program to migrate 90% of on-premises applications to the cloud by 2025, this included the implementation of a solution for secure access to legacy authentication.• Provided technical consultancy to the program to implement the ACSC Essential Eight including Securing Privileged Access, Application Control and Multi-Factor Authentication.

Responsible for driving strategic outcomes and technical direction across Woodside’s protective security controls including Identity, Access, Endpoint, and web and to act as the lead cyber adviser across Woodside’s technology, new energy functions including high-risk country operations and coded project activities.Key Achievements• Delivered a consolidated roadmap for security, covering 2022-2024 based on input from all leads across the security team.• Undertook a high-level review of the Identity & Access management solutions to determine whether they were fit-for-purpose strategically.• Undertook an assessment of options to enable seamless web content filtering capability using either Microsoft Defender or Zscaler solutions. Delivered a recommendation (which was accepted) to utilise the Microsoft solution as it was already funded and provided sufficient capability to meet the requirements.

As Principal Architect – Security & Identity, Michael has worked across both the Information Protection Security Engineering and the Identity & Access Management teams. This combined role leverages the breadth of experience Michael has and allows him to utilise the strong partnership he has developed with Microsoft. Michael has also continued with his passion for the consumerisation of the enterprise, developing the strategy to support the secure move to “bring your own”, based around a device/identity trust model. He has also used his problem-solving abilities, and understanding of technology, to see new opportunities to leverage the technology in different ways. This led to the enablement of Microsoft Teams as a secure solution for managing highly sensitive data. Michael has also helped develop, and become a keen advocate of, the use of the key design decision process to simplify problems and gain stakeholder agreement in the design process. In January 2016, Michael was appointed as Senior Enterprise Architect ‐ Security in the newly created Strategy, Architecture and Planning team. In this role his key accountability was to provide security architecture expertise to the shared services areas with specific focus on the transformation programs of Cloud, Workplace and Network. In addition to covering the security architecture across these key areas, as a result of his passion, experience, knowledge and skills across the client environment, Michael has also taken on the role as the technical architect for the delivery of the Windows 10 based Workplace environment. In this he has led the implementation of a seamless security capability built into the Windows 10 environment that has significantly raised the security posture whilst not impacting the overall user experience. During this time Michael worked very closely with the Microsoft security team in developing some of these security capabilities.

In 2007, on his return to Australia, Michael moved into a global security architecture role as the Lead Security Architect within bp's Information & Technology Services Digital Security team. This role covered the development of the security architecture & security strategy activities with a primary focus on Information Protection as well as security architecture consultancy.Michael attained his TOGAF 8.1.1 certification

In November 2004 Michael moved his young family to the UK for a 2‐year posting as the technical architect on the new desktop program. During this time, he managed a small, highly technical team who delivered exceptional results, including the first generation of desktop not tied to the corporate network. This was well ahead of its time and would be the precursor for the desktop environment we would utilise in the future to leverage home working and the consumerisation of the enterprise.

Michael joined BP in July 2000 and through to October 2004 he held a variety of management roles within the technology services area in Australasia. He successfully managed the Australasian implementation of the ‘Transforming the Back Office Project” which was a refresh of all core infrastructure. Through his technical depth, eye for detail and quality delivery, Michael became well known to the global technology teams and eventually became a highly respected member of these teams.

Michael had two primary roles during his time working for SAIC/Alphawest. He was the Senior Technical Consultant for the Melbourne SAIC office, a role that involved the provision of technical consulting, planning, project management and support for both internal and external customers. Michael was also the E‐Mail Service Line Manager for BP Australasia, which was both a hands‐on technical as well as managerial role. Michael was responsible for the management of the E‐Mail Service Team that provided the architecture, design and support for the Microsoft Exchange messaging environment throughout Australia and New Zealand. The team Michael ran continued to both meet and exceed the contractual SLA ﴾Service Level Agreement﴿ for the BP E‐Mail Services throughout his time in this role.

Michael started his career as a trainee programmer in 1987 and over the next 10 years undertook many roles within the technology environment. He was instrumental in the implementation of the first networked desktop environment to replace mainframe terminals and the implementation of a group‐wide email service based on emerging Microsoft technologies.
