I focus on working with nurses and SRS employees who are planning for retirement (or already retired) for a reason. When I was in high school we had someone come and talk to us about investing. I was immediately interested in it and went home to talk to my mom about how I could start. My mom said, "Well, why don't I set up an appointment with my Edward Jones financial advisor Bill?" We sat down with him and he taught me exactly what I needed to know, and I said "Wow, I would love to do something like this." Bill laughed and told me that if I really wanted to get started, I needed to do some homework. He had me read multiple books and 30+ annual reports from famous investors. I realized while I was in college for finance and statistics (on Bill's advice, of course), what a positive influence he had on my family and my life. I wanted to find a way to pay that forward. Bill suggested that my first client should be my mom, to see how I could help her. She had listened to Bill, worked incredibly hard as a dental hygienist, saved her entire life, and now she wanted to make sure she wasn't going to run out of money when she eventually retired. It was amazing to see the look on her face when she realized that all her hard work and listening to the advice of her financial advisor was going to allow her to live the retirement life she wanted. Five years later I met my fiancé, a hardworking nurse from Columbia, SC. I'm embarrassed to admit that I had no clue how hard and important a nurse's work was. I learned through my conversation with her and her co-workers that their story sounded a lot like my moms. They work hard, save their money, and when retirement is right around the corner they just want to make sure they've done enough. I thought: What a perfect way to pay forward what Bill had done for my family. Pay it forward by helping nurses who are planning for retirement, about to retire, or just retired. Show them that their hard work paid off and keep them on track throughout retirement. Because we are located in Aiken, SC, we found that a lot of our nurses were married to SRS employees, which put us in a position to learn about their financial pain points as well.
