  • Dealer Inspire
    Engineering Manager
    Dealer Inspire Jul 2021 - Aug 2024
    Naperville, Illinois, Us
I’m three years into my role as Engineering Manager at Dealer Inspire (DI), where I transitioned to continue developing my leadership skills while growing my tactical and strategic business abilities. This role has given me direct accountability over key areas, enabling me to influence both engineering and business outcomes. As Engineering Manager for the Inventory product, my focus is on supporting our 30 OEM clients (e.g., Ford, General Motors, Toyota, Stellantis, etc.). This position has been challenging but rewarding, as I’ve introduced sustainable processes to manage the fast-paced, often unpredictable nature of requests, timelines, and demands. The DI Inventory system evolved from a growth-focused startup environment, where speed of delivery took priority over maintainability and scalability. Two years ago, DI became more tightly integrated with CARS.com’s technology organization, allowing us to capitalize on synergies and play a critical role in their broader product offerings.Key Achievements:- Established a relationship of collaboration and trust between the engineering team and our OEM client management team. This was previously missing.- Built and continue to adapt processes, tools, and metrics to measure team performance, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.- Shifted focus from reactive fire-fighting to proactive delivery and accountability, improving day-to-day operations. My team continues focusing on increasing velocity and quality while managing the legacy system, as other teams work to replace it. We’re methodically addressing technical debt and creating a foundation for faster, more efficient product delivery.
  • Dealer Inspire
    Senior Software Engineer
    Dealer Inspire Nov 2019 - Jul 2021
    Naperville, Illinois, Us
This role was an internal transfer to Cars.com’s subsidiary, where I led a team of four developers to deliver the second iteration of our Inventory Management System (IMS) product, called METAL. In this full-stack role, I worked on a Node.js/GraphQL backend utilizing a distributed, serverless architecture, paired with a React front-end. The broader system was part of a service-oriented architecture (SOA) ecosystem. My primary focus was to drive progress on v2 of METAL, a major rewrite aimed at reducing the technical debt that had been severely hindering scalability, performance, and maintainability. A key part of this effort was refactoring the backend to replace the NoSQL MongoDB database with a relational database, and migrating the system to a serverless architecture. After the core refactor was complete, our focus shifted to delivering key MVP features, such as custom vehicle image overlays and adaptive pricing rules, which provided greater flexibility and value to our users.
  • Cars.Com
    Senior Software Engineer
    Cars.Com Feb 2011 - Oct 2019
    Chicago, Illinois, Us
Cars.com was a pivotal point in my career, marking my transition into a full-fledged software engineering organization. During my time there, I gained invaluable experience through diverse, challenging projects and collaboration with a talented team. My contributions included both product team process improvements and significant technical advancements to the Cars.com website. One of my proudest technical achievements was leading Cars.com’s first significant AWS cloud migration. I spearheaded the effort to move the back-end and front-end of our vehicle detail page (the second-most viewed page on the site) to the cloud with three core objectives: 1) enhance page performance, 2) improve maintainability, and 3) reduce operational costs. This was achieved through an incremental, non-disruptive approach, avoiding a "big-bang" rewrite. We first migrated the back-end, maintaining API compatibility via feature flags, allowing us to run the existing front-end in parallel. Once the back-end was stable, we successfully transitioned the front-end. This included a new service-oriented architecture for fetching and caching data, managed Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, and finally built a robust continuous integration pipeline while maintaining SEM metrics.Beyond technical initiatives, I contributed to the maturity of the Cars Product team processes. I worked across various teams and roles, participating in multiple large-scale agile transformations. We experimented with different frameworks, including several Scrum methodologies and a Lean approach in partnership with Pivotal Labs. I was one of a core group of engineers selected to work off-site with Pivotal Labs for three months, learning and then implementing this Lean process within the broader Cars engineering team. CThis experience, alongside my subsequent role at Dealer Inspire, allowed me to refine my approach to software process management, tailoring agile frameworks to best suit different project needs.
  • Havi
    Senior Software Engineer
    Havi Nov 1999 - Jan 2011
    Chicago, Illinois, Us
This role marked an important moment in my career, transitioning me into professional programming and setting the stage for my development in software engineering. I began working with Java, designing and developing both internal and external business applications. During the early days of Java, our team created a custom Java framework, giving me invaluable experience in building and maintaining a proprietary web framework. We successfully utilized this framework across several products before migrating to an open-source solution in later years.Additionally, this role offered international exposure, allowing me to work in Germany with our sister company on a significant supply chain solution project.Key Contributions:As a developer and eventual lead, I was responsible for two critical web applications that supported a key initiative for McDonald's, automating order proposals for 14,000 U.S. McDonald's restaurants. These applications optimized the supply chain by generating accurate, automated order suggestions, driving operational efficiency across the restaurant network.Later, I contributed to a team developing a comprehensive supply chain solution that integrated supplier inventory and shipment data, feeding it into a JDA Fulfillment engine. This project complemented our existing raw item ordering system by empowering planners with greater visibility and control over supplier-managed inventory.Another significant project I led was the design and development of a web-based restaurant reporting tool, providing restaurants with insights into raw material waste and operational efficiency. This tool was instrumental in identifying potential cost savings, amounting to thousands of dollars per restaurant annually.
  • The Nielsen Company
    Statistical Analyst
The Nielsen Company Jun 1994 - Oct 1999
    New York, Ny, Us
Provided statistical analyses to consumer packaged goods clients using store scanning data and household panel purchase data. The role involved significant programming in SAS statistical language and scripting languages. I also developed some data analysis tools in Excel with VBA.In my final year I managed a key analytical product in addition to my analyst role. This included project oversight, estimating work, timelines, pricing projects and providing internal sales support. This is the role that turned my career to software engineering. I enjoyed working with the data and analytics. But, it was the means, the SAS programming that got me excited and I want to do more and more. This got me hooked on programming.
  • Symphony Iri Group
    Business System Analyst
Symphony Iri Group Apr 1993 - Jun 1994
    Chicago, Il, Us
This was a hybrid role working in both US and Germany with our in-market partner, German market research firm, GfK. The project was to integrate German point-of-sale data with IRI’s modeling and analytics to drive data-guided insights in the German CPG market. I focused on getting data collection processes initiated and operational, as well as getting the German team trained in the operations.I loved this role as it got me back to Germany and exposure to the German working environment. For a first-job, I had a lot of independence in this role. It gave me valuable practice with organizational skills and people leadership.
