University Of California, Riverside Jan 2011 - Aug 2014
    Riverside, Ca, Us
As an IGERT Fellow in the NSF IGERT in Video Bioinformatics Program at UC Riverside, I've been involved with the image and video processing of biological data from multiple optical and medical imaging technologies. I developed MATLAB-based automated and semi-automated methods for (1) measuring the growth rates of wildtype and mutant pollen tubes from confocal fluorescence microscopy video data, (2) measuring the density of animal bones from 3D computed tomography (CT) images and (3) measuring optical changes associated with seizure activity in the mouse hippocampus from OCT video data. Additionally, using the Amira and CL Quant software packages, I measured wound healing rates from in vitro phase contrast microscopy video data and measured growth rates of wild type and cigarette smoke treated stem cell colonies.
  • University Of California, Riverside
    Bioengineering Doctoral Candidate
University Of California, Riverside Jan 2010 - Aug 2014
    Riverside, Ca, Us
As a Bioengineering Doctoral Candidate in the Neuroscience and Optical Imaging Research (NOIR) group, I've been involved in a variety of projects related to the design and development of multi-functional spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) for applications in Neuroscience. A common theme in the work I've done is the development of software for OCT system operation and OCT image analysis. My early work was concerned with the development of characterization algorithms for classifying biological tissue using optical properties measured from OCT and polarization-sensitive OCT (PS-OCT) images. I worked on the developement of parallelized spectral domain OCT image reconstruction algorithms for high-speed multi-functional OCT imaging using NVIDIA CUDA and GPUs. I assisted in the design and development of a multi-threaded software application for managing the acquisition, processing and saving of multi-modality optical imaging (OCT, PS-OCT, Doppler OCT and Fluorescence Microscopy (FM)) and electrophysiology data using Visual C++/MFC. This involved designing the basic structure of thread communication and synchronization, implementing software-based control of hardware components using the NI-DAQmx and NI-IMAQ libraries, integrating CUDA and IPP based processing for real-time multi-functional OCT imaging and designing the graphical user interface for operating our spectral-domain OCT systems. More recently, I've prototyped a new version of the application using C#/.NET and the WPF framework. Finally, I've implemented the hardware and software necessary to perform optical coherence phase microscopy (OCPM) for quantitative label-free imaging of biological cells. On a systems level, I've performed optical alignment and troubleshooting of the optical and electronic components that comprise our two spectral domain OCT systems centered at 1310 nm and 800 nm.

    Software Engineering Intern
Modulated Imaging, Inc. Jun 2013 - Sep 2013
    Irvine, California, Us
As a summer software engineering intern at a medical device startup company, I was in charge of developing and prototyping a cross-platform software package for 3D visualization of spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) data. At the completion of 13 weeks, we had a fully working Windows desktop version of the software written using C#/.NET and the XNA, MVVMCross and WPF frameworks. We implemented a standardized data loading feature as well as 2D and 3D visualization, multi-image registration and masking and visualization export features. The development of the software was tracked using the Git distributed version control system and the full project managed using Agile software development methodology.

University of California Leadership Excellence Through Advances Degrees (UC LEADS) Scholar.I worked under the mentorship of Dr. Kara McCloskey in the School of Engineering. My research encompassed two projects related to vascular tissue engineering. I began initial work on a project identifying specific growth factors or combinations thereof that control the fate decisions of vascular progenitor cells and on the development of a tissue-engineered cardiac patch for treatment of tissue ischemia resulting from myocardial infarction. Central to both projects was work involving vascular cell culture and maintenance (endothelial, smooth muscle and fibroblasts) and vascular cell imaging (light and fluorescence microscopy).

    La Jolla, Ca, Us
UCSD Summer Training Academy for Research in the Sciences (UCSD STARS) participant.I worked under the mentorship of Dr. Gabriel Silva in the Department of Bioengineering. My research involved studying the effects of the Amyloid-Beta peptide, the primary pathological peptide present in Alzheimer's Disease patients, and its capacity as an inducing agent of reactive gliosis in a retinal cell line. This work was part of a broader project to develop an in vitro screening platform for anti-gliotic drugs. I primarily cultured Muller cells from the rat retina and performed immunocytochemistry (ICC) to examine the expression levels of Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) and Vimentin to determine the induction efficacy of reactive gliosis by Amyloid-Beta.
  • Ucsf
    Undergraduate Research Assistant
    Ucsf Jun 2007 - Aug 2007
    San Francisco, California, Us
UCSF Summer Research Training Program (UCSF SRTP) participant.I worked under the mentorship of Dr. Tracy Luks in the Dynamic Neuroimaging Laboratory. My research involved using Voxel-Based Morphometry (VBM) to assess global brain matter atrophy, specifically gray matter, to determine the neurobiological basis of attention control and conflict monitoring. Metrics of these cognitive tasks are assessed via the performance on The Erickson Flanker Task. Using the Statistical Parametric Mapping 2 (SPM2) software package in MATLAB, we showed that areas of gray matter atrophy in the brain involved in attenion control and conflict monitoring correlate with decreased accuracy and increase response time on the Erickson Flanker Task.
